Power backup? Oh we are gonna invest in one when hubby comes home from Kuwait. I just encountered my first power surge living on a military installation. I am just trying to clean and reorganize since hubby comes home in 4 weeks.

So I need to get the best...least expensive brand of power backup. How does those work? On a rechargable battery?

Any info and experience using them will be of great help.

I found APC (American Power Conversion) to be a good reliable one. They have a good site to help you select which one is right for you.
http://www.apc.com/tools/ups_selector/index.cfm
If you want some help in deciding what's right for you, just let me know what you are connecting. Right now I have thei Back-UPS RS 1500 for my computer, printer, and computer speakers. I also have a Back-UPS ES 725 Broadband for my entertainment center (TV, DVD-Recorder, DirecTV Tivo, and speakers), and am going to buy one for my routers, extra computer, Vonage system, and phones. I like APC because you can always return your existing battery, and they will give you a credit towards the purchase of a new UPS.

We have 4 Desktops...2 in one room and 2 in another. One PC has the Wireless MS, Linksys for the Vonage, the Motorola Modem, Printer, phone and speaker.

Can I purchase the power backup at Best Buy or Circuit City somewhere?

Honda makes a full range of quiet generators. They monitor the input power from a convenient source outside the house. As soon as the power drops out they automatically fire up to supply power to your house until main power is restored or it runs out of gas.

Honda has great products...we own 2 Accords. But I am sure that would be great to have when we buy a house. Thanks I will look into that and see a price range so we can get one later down the road. In the meantime I just need one of those UPS

I thought there were issues with generators in that it can back feed into the power lines if proper disconnect relays were NOT installed. I heard of electical repair crews being harmed when a back feed from a generator shocked a worker trying to restore power to the neighborhood. Be careful if using Generators for BU power.

Ms Tyson,

If you have a nearby military exchange you might find a few of the APC UPS units available. The last time I visited our local Navy Exchange I found one or two models. I also saw models at Sams Club and Costco stores.

An earlier response suggested you go to the APC web site (www.apcc.com) and let it help you determine which model is most applicable to your hardware configuration. I suggest the same.

And when Scat Tyson calls in next time, tell him hello from grateful Americans everywhere, if I may be so bold to speak on their behalf.

Thanks him and all the troops and the families appreciate the support and prayers. Very Happy
