I got a new Motorola SB5100 from Walmart and I canNOT get over 400-600kbps (download) in 2wire tests - I've tried last two weeks all times of the day, all days of the week. My buddy w/ comcast about 30 miles away run simultaneous tests w/ me and he is consistently averaging 3100-3600Kbps.
Do I need a firmware upgrade for my modem? It is rated at Docs 2.0 and 1.1 (says on the box). Comcast tech is here right now and signal to the modem looks very strong.

I use the 5100 on Adelphia. I'm not sure how Comcast does it but Adelphia pushes the firmware update as you need it. I didn't think it was something the user was able to do on their own.
If you haven't been there before check out

It's an excellent place to get help on any broadband questions. The people there are extemely helpful.
The have a Motorola forum.

that's weird. pretty sure any updates would be sent from comcast. but since they were too lazy to fix their toshiba pcx1100 problem, I doubt they have anything for the sb5100 either.
what kind of data are you getting from http://192.168.100.1 ? docsis blah blah doesn't really matter. |

I also have the SB 5100 but with a much earlier firmware release.
Software Version: SB5100-1.1.1.1-SCM01-NOSH
Hardware Version: 2
MIB Version: II
GUI Version: 1.0
VxWorks Version: 5.4
I have a small private owned cable company as my ISP and they did not know the first thing about pushing firmware for the cable modem. I have also sent an e-mail to the manufacturer customer support asking what I should do, if I hear back I will let you know. |

I will check on the modem information late tonight and post.
I am running Win2k Pro and XP Pro.
The techie yesterday afternoon did 'find' out that the 'Denver system' had my new Mot SB5100 modem incorrectly identified as a "generic" or "unknown" modem. The local tech ofc told him (via his Nextel) that this could be an issue. The 'fix' did not take until late last night as their new 'Bedrock' system was down during yesterday afternoon.
Last night I rebooted the system after the reps told me online that the modem seems to be correct (well, they told me this last week as well- are there two different systems?). I did Vonage-Forum's speed check + broadband reports'. It seems I am now running about 1.7M - 4.2 M downstream (Vonage-forums' speed check shows the lower end range) and about 345+ upstream. Hey, looks like I got the new upgrade in speed?
I went back to the old 2wire.com site - increases now show 700-800K (lot better than the 250-600K, normally on lower end, the previous two weeks).
So, assuming my speed issue is fixed due to the name change in their system (+ I got the speed upgrade), what's happening w/ the 2wire.com speed check. My buddy 35 miles away is still running over 3Mbps on that site as well ? |
