PostPosted: Thu Mar 24, 2005 1:35 pm    Post subject: HELP with DirecTV Tivo!!! Reply with quote Back to top

Ok I know there's a hundred posts on here about this, but I need it explained to me in simple terms! LOL

I just called DirecTV. I have a Hughes Tivo unit of theirs. They said I can't use Vonage with it because it only works with a landline. Is this true or not???? Well, who knows.

We are getting rid of our landline soon, so I wanted to know two things:

1 - My Hughes DirecTV Tivo has 2 USB ports in the back. We have a wireless computer network here at my house. Is there any way I could use Vonage to dial out for updates, using that USB port and a wireless adapter? If so, how?

2 - If that's not doable, how would I go about using my laptop to update the Tivo once a week or so???

I have been trying to make sense of other posts on here, but either they have different Tivo's than me or other systems. ANY help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!!!!!

Thanks so much!

Christie

DirecTV is correct in saying that the Tivo won't make it's daily call with Vonage. I tried using all the dialing prefixes to get my Tivo to dial out, but it just didn't work, so I tried the PPP. I just got the PPP connection to my computer set up tonight, and it works like a charm. The only problem is the pay per views (ppv), you will want to order them online if you ever want to order a ppv, besides, then it goes to all of your receivers at no extra cost. Very Happy

I used that site to set everything up and found it very easy to follow. especially when it came to the picture part. I made a couple of daily calls on my Tivo, and they both went through. It wasn't too difficult to set up either. I just followed the steps, and did a lot of cutting and pasting, and my Tivo is working just fine. If you find a step confusing, just post a reply to this thread, and I'm sure someone would be able to help you out.[/url]

^^^^^Your url tags are reversed for some reason.

What you will need in order to do the PPP/serial method is a TiVo Null Modem Serial Cable. I got mine here, http://www.9thtee.com/tivo-dt2.htm for around $10. It is halfway down the page. Works like a charm, I run it every couple of weeks to keep the nag away. Order PPVs over the web, so the show is on every TV, and I don't waste my time trying to get DTiVo trying to make the call over Vonage.

Good Luck. If you want to have reference material to read here is the link that got me going: http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?postid=2487738#post2487738

Guys thanks SO much...I will try the PPP thing. If I screw it up I know where to find you. hehehe Razz And yeah, good idea about ording PPV on the web to get it on all the tv's!

OOPS wait, one question....So with this method, when I hook it up with the null modem cable to my computer, I have to run the calls manually when I want to update it? And does it actually dial out or does it just download the updates through the internet? I'm a little confused as to how it actually works. Confused

sorry about the tags.

You can either run the calls manually, or you can leave your Tivo hooked up to you laptop over night. most of the calls are done between midnight and 3 am, so just plug it in once a week when you go to bed, and leave it on all night, or if you want you can just go to the phone set up and make a daily call. either way will work.

I don't know if you guys are aware of this, but DirecTiVo doesn't actually have to call home. You'll get the annoying message each day, but you can go on forever without a daily call.

I wen't about 280 days before I was able to get my DirecTiVo hooked back up to the ethernet.

I am aware of that, over at www.tivocommunity.com there have been guys that have gone 600 days without a call. I just figured that I can use the PPP/Serial method without any hassles, this means I get software updates (which can be a crapshoot in itself) and I don't have to deal with the nag. A a series 1 owner I don't expect any more software updates, but when I click my now playing list I don't need to navigate around that blasted message when I can just force a call though my PC.

Just wanted to let everyone know, because the messages are a little misleading and express a sense of urgency (err the TiVo message), but there really isn't an urgency to call. I got up to 280 days once until I was able to re-connect my TiVo to the ethernet.
