I had to rearrange my routers yesterday, I did a reset on the Vonage RT31P2 router. The phone1 light is on. I get dialtone. But when I try to dialout and as soon as the person picks up, i lose the connection. Also, if someone trys to call me, it forwards to my cellphone. I think my account is stuck in network unavailibity mode for some reason. any help is appreciated..

I have my Vonage router's internet port plugged into port 1 of my wireless router. I have not changed any settings to my Vonage router. I think the problem lies in my configuration. But then why would I even get a dialtone?

so I assume the cable modem or whatever you have is plugged into the wan port of the wireless router? any particular reason you want it that way and not the rt31p2 first in line?
it sounds like the wless router is blocking some, but not all ports that Vonage needs. do you have any type of port forwarding or dmz setup in the wless? if your computers are plugged into or use the wless router, I would put the rt31p2 in the dmz. if your computers are running off of the rt31p2, just try the port forwarding. the rt31p2 still works fine if plugged directly into the modem right?

ports:
5060 – 5061 (UDP)
10000 – 20000 (UDP)

i appreciate you rhelp....

let me start from beginning

2 configs that I tried..

1) Vonage as master router and the wireless as slave.....i disabled the dhcp and set the LAN ip to the proper range on the wirless router and connected port 1 of wirless to port 4 of Vonage. things worked well, but only problem was that my bandwidth would decrease like crazy when a person would be on the phone. I even adjusted the bandiwidth thing on account settings, yet no difference..... so then I decided to change roles,

2) i had wireless as master and Vonage as slave..... i first did reset on both routers to defaults, i plugged Vonage internet port into port 4 of wireless...........actually i just got calll from home, its works fine now in this config...........i still have yet to disable dhcp/nat on my Vonage router...........

but do you think that, config 1 is better? if so, what is the resolution to the speed problem...... i have not tested speed program on config 2......

also can you explain this dmz setting you are talkign about...what does that do..... my friend in config 2 has been getting lots of dropped calls....what do you think the probelm is with that...

I think you're doing more than is necessary for the most part. these things are more or less designed for plug n play. for instance, my rt31p2 is first, then I have a wireless router connected to it. (why are you using such odd ports? I would stick with port 1) then I have my computers connected to the wireless router. the rt31p2 serves dhcp as well as the wless. there are no conflicts and it works fine.

I would keep it as config 1. your problem is likely caused by qos settings on the rt31p2, though I have seen one or two bad rt31p2's that would cause this also. if you access the device at http://192.168.15.1 (password admin, no username) and click apps and gaming, then qos, find out what it's set to. the simplest way is to have them all disabled except for voice, and have voice set at something like 256 or some people have luck with 512. the apparent "correct' way to do it is to put in 80-90% of your upload bandwidth. so you do a bunch of speed tests and such, and then you have your number.
what are your advertised speeds from your isp?
also, you say your bandwidth decreases like crazy, but like many other things, this is very vague. download? upload? how much? how are you measuring it? if you don't lay everything out there, it makes it much harder to troubleshoot.

advertised speed of ISP is 4Mb. When I speak of speed decreasing, its from download. My download would go from 45kb/s to 3/kbs if i'm downloading a movie or something....

so let me get this straight..... with your setting, please tell me the following:

1)Vonage (master) RT31P2
IP: 192.168.15.1?
DHCP: ON

2)Wireless (slave)
IP: ?
DHCP: OFF

Are those your settings? I was advised by other people to set the IP of the slaved router to one more then the masters. So in this case, that IP would be 192.168.15.2. With this config, things were working fine, but the the speeds would be boggled...

also, when I resetted the Vonage router yesterday, it would not establish internet connection......... so I decided to use the CD that it came with, it worked after that....but I was not able to log into the router after that....dont know why.... you think the CD creates the password?

I've never heard of it talked in master and slave terms like drives are, but anyway, as I said in the previous post "the rt31p2 serves dhcp as well as the wless. there are no conflicts and it works fine."

cable modem to rt31p2 (internal ip is 192.168.15.1 not that it makes a difference) external ip is whatever ip I get from the isp. then I have the wireless router's internet/wan port connected to port 1 of the rt31p2. it's internal ip, again, not that it matters, happens to be 192.168.2.1, and its rt31p2 or "external" assigned ip is 192.168.15.100. then I have the computers which get the ip from the wless. so their ip's are 192.168.2.xxx

there is nothing groundbreaking or complex about this. and if you looked at vonage.com, it's exactly like this:
http://vonage.com/help_knowledgeBase_article.php?category=45&article=61

you can't login to the rt31p2 anymore? are you getting a password option or is it page can't be displayed. if the latter, make sure you actually have a computer plugged into the rt31p2, then it should work. and then you can set it up for remote administration too.

the reason why I ask of local ip is because of subnet. I was told that, if the local IPs of both routers are not part of the same subnet, meaning 192.168.15.x. Then file and print sharing is not possible. Which makes sense. So i guess my question is, in your cinfig, if you plug a comp into Vonage router and in the wireless router, will they communicate, will they network? most likely not....

that is the reason why I asked you what your settings were.....

i do get the logon screen, but none of the passwords work.... i've tried every combination of blank/admin, admin/blank, blank/blank, admin/admin.... nothing worked.... it works when I reset the router, but then I have to use the CD to get it working, afterwhich the passwords dont work.....i'm wondering if Vonage changes the password....if so, to what..hmm..

heh, ok, things are slowly making more sense as you explain your setup and what you want to do.
so for whatever reason you have computers using both routers, and want to be able to talk in between them all. this is what I'm understanding 10 posts into it here. as I've posted a couple times, all of my computers are off the wless, so I've never even tried to network them off of both, but yes I'm pretty sure you would want to disable dhcp on one of the routers and have everything on the same subnet.
your rt31p2 is looking weirder by the minute. the cd doesn't change anything as far as the password (it should be admin), and you shouldn't need to use the cd anyway. that coupled with the odd download results makes me wonder if your device is a little screwy. what exactly happens if you do this to the rt31p2:

connect it directly to the modem, unplug all other ethernet cables, unplug power, unplug phone cords, push and hold reset button, plug power back in while holding reset button, keep holding reset button for 15 seconds after powering back on. keep an eye on the power light, and don't plug the phones back in (or power the box off) until it stops blinking.

this should absolutely make it work, as long as your isp uses dhcp to assign you an ip, and doesn't employ mac address filtering.
