PostPosted: Thu Mar 24, 2005 8:46 am    Post subject: Problems with new installation. Reply with quote Back to top

I'm a new customer with Vonage, but I haven't had the pleasure to enjoy their services as of yet. I received my new router in the mail, set it up, and I get no dial tone. I have the RT31P2 router, and since I'm familiar with Linksys routers, I figured this would be an easy install.
Of course my problem is that I'm not getting any dial tone, in either phone port.

I have restored my factory defaults on the router, then powered everything down (cable, router, unplugged cpu).
One at a time, I brought the cable up, then the router. After waiting a good 10-20 minutes (just to be safe), I plug the phone in and get no dial tone. The phone LED's never give a steady light, all they do constantly is blink every few seconds. I'm getting a steady light from the power LED, and the network LED is blinking quickly for me, showing there is data coming down.

I can surf the net through this router, with no problems, it's just the phone that is giving me a hard time.

The firmware version is 1.25.00 I believe, so I am sure it might help to get this updated.

So bottom line, is there anyone that can give me any idea's on what I should do here? Is there an tftp server I can connect to and download this firmware update? I can't find it anywhere on the web of course.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated,

Tom

Sorry to hear about your difficulties.

Your problem could be as simple as a configuration issue on Vonage's side. They may not have your MAC address configured correctly. I have to ask one question. In the instructions that came with your new router, did it mention that you have to "activate" your new router somehow? I am not sure if you have to do this if you get your router directly through Vonage.

Either way, I would give them a call and be prepared to wait on hold for a while. You could also try sending a PM to jdr30. He may be able to help you. Just be sure to include your account number.

I hope everything works out for you.

jnuzzi: you don't have to activate ones that come from Vonage. you're probably right about the mac thing.

robbie: if the led's aren't lit it won't matter. and he specifically said he has tried both phone ports.

Medeoker: there is a tftp server you can download from, searching here would be a good bet since you already tried the web. but what's a repost anymore.
tftp tftp.vonage.net get RT31P2_v1.28.00_000_combin_code.bin
that's the latest firmware apparently, but I'm 99% sure you won't be able to update it yourself. only one person claims to have been able to do it. read all about it here:
http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic2928-20.html
you could also use tftp tftp.vonage.net get test just to prove you can connect at all. what is your isp and how is your network setup? but regardless, you're probably going to have to call as jnuzzi said.

I ordered the hardware directly from Vonage, so I don't think there was any special activation involved.
As far as the MAC address goes... You think they have my routers mac address wrong on their side, and that could be what is hanging me up? If so, can they make that change, and then everything would be hunky dory?
I actually called their cu. service last night, and got another router re-shipped to me, but I would like to still solve this problem if it's solvable, I dont want to really wait 5 days to get my service working.

the wrong mac has been an issue for several people here.
it may take you 5 days to get through to support, and some users have had the mac address on the account instantly changed to the new one that was being shipped to them. so again, calling is your best option.

Ok,

I'm still having the same problems here... Vonage over nighted me another router, and I'm experiencing the same issues (no dial tone, router not updated firmware past 1.25.00). I called their crappy it support, and the guy wanted me to do basic troubleshooting, when he could not, he said he was going to transfer me to his supervisor (I don't know why, I didn't ask for one). Funny, he transferred me back to customer service.

Well, I got po'd, so I cancelled my account.

But, I really would like to try Vonage, so I called them back, and spoke with a young lady that was extreemly helpful and patient. She created another account to me, and is shipping me yet another router (my 3rd), which is fine.

But the most important thing, is she said she's willing to stay in touch me with me so I can avoid their crappy IT Support. She knows some of the senior techs there, and said she can hook me up with them if I experience problems with my new account, and router.

So, the question I have is... Given everything you've read on these last posts, trying to sense my problem... What is it I should ask one of these guys to do when I get in touch with them? Is something mis-configured or what on their end?

Thanks to all that has been trying to help me out on this...

Ok,

I was a little busy this weekend with Easter, so I haven't had time to get back here and answer your questions.

My isp is Roadrunner, or Brighthouse here in Orlando.
I don't have anything special setup in my network, just the cable modem to the router, and I have 2 pc's, but I've troubleshooted with 0 pc's 1 pc and 2 pcs all plugged into it.

As far as the tftp thing, I tried that over the weekend. I tried updatting it through the web gui for the router, and also with the tftp utility that you can get from linksys. Neither option worked, I was getting a series of error messages "could not flash ROM" etc...

So I think I'm back to square 2, that is waiting for yet another router, and try this one more time, then I suppose I'll cancel the service if it doesn't work.

Thanks again

I still don't see where you've said you tried this:

tftp tftp.vonage.net get RT31P2_v1.28.00_000_combin_code.bin

The reason Reebok asked if you could get the file from tftp.vonage.net was to test connectivity. If you can't manually tftp the file, then neither can your Vonage adapter, and that may be the problem.
