It would not seem like a difficult thing to create a database with all of these addresses, and match the caller's phone number up with a name and address record. That way when someone calls 911, the name and address goes onto the screen.

There are times when you may not be able to speak. Or a child could place the call and not know for sure what their address is. I am surprised to read that there is not any cross-referencing being done. It can be very important to have that info readily available.

Like you, I will be keeping my police/fire/ambulance posted at my phone. It would certainly speed things up. You save 2 seconds calling 911 over calling an extra 4 digits, but how much time is wasted once you reach the 911 operator.

It is still an excellent idea to have the 911 functionality. It is not always me who is home here. A friend could be looking after my home, and it is nice to know that they can dial 911 and get someone when I'm not here.

A big thanks to Vonage for working on this. I am sure it will get better as time goes on and someone figures out a better and more accurate method for doing this.

I'm curious as to how calling the local number supplies the police/ambulance/fire your address any more than this 911 service.

The police might be able to match my phone number up with my address because I had to register my burglar alarm with them. So they have my Vonage number on file.

The other thing is my alarm system has a panic button on it which automatically calls the police. It also has a fire button on it which will instruct ADT to call the Fire Department. ADT has all of my information, and it is the alarm system signals that they receive that they pay more attention to than the caller id number. They also have my new phone number. They need the phone number to call the house to clear up false alarms.

I just received the confirmation email from Vonage that my address has been verfied and 911 dialing is active! It took five business days. I'm going to test it later to see where it is being answered. I'll post the result.

If you are going to test it, I recommend not testing on a Friday or Saturday night. Pick a time on a Sunday morning or some other time during the day. Tell the operator that you are testing your 911 service as you have an alternate telephone service provider. Ask the operator if you have reached the emergency dispatch for your city. As stated in the terms of service for 911 service, 911 calls from Vonage are being routed to the "Public Safety Access Point" for your area. This could be the local 911 centre, the local police dispatch, or a non-emergency number. Remember that your address information won't be delivered to PSAP when you call it.

Mine was activated today too, and I'm in Gatineau. They were VERY busy today.

I am nervous about testing this. They could get annoyed if a non-emergency call comes into their dispatch centre.

Yeah, I'm nervous about testing it too but it seems irresponsible not to. The idea is not to do it on a Friday night (called "Fight Night" by Vancouver Police because of the number of bar brawls they called to) or a Saturday night ("Saturday night's all right for fighting, get a little action in").

Where did your call go to? Telecom engineers often test 911 to ensure that the call gets out, the trick is in the timing.

I have no idea as to where the call goes. Hopefully somewhere here in Gatineau. It would be great if they could actually patch the call into the real 911 centre.
