PostPosted: Tue Mar 22, 2005 1:05 am    Post subject: Bandwidth hog - Uploading through 2nd router Reply with quote Back to top

I'm hoping to find a solution because so far I love my service with Vonage but need a solution. I am running 3 pcs, VPN and for business I run netmeeting and share my desktop to my clients while on the phone. I have a 4mb comcast connection and while off the Voip line, I can upload at 719 kbps, but once I'm on the line my uploads drop to 118kbps. This makes NetMeeting VERY slow to upload my desktop for hour long conversations. I know I can just to a 6mb service, but that cost difference doesn't justify the savings from the local telephone provider. This vast difference tells me Vonage isn't using the bandwidth they claim, and my bandwidth meter is set at 30kbps.

Any suggestions?

Please post your hardware configuration.

Are you perhaps running everything through a Linksys RT31P2. Many users here have reported throughput problems. The consensus here is becoming to purchase a WRT54G and run the third party firmware from svesoft.

Some relevant links

I've been troubleshooting all morning and now I've narrowed the problem down. After confirming, I have 768 upload with Comcast and hooked directly to the modem I hit 717 so I'm pleased with that. Hardwired to the RT21P2 I hit 707 - 718 so the Voip router is working fine. Wireless to the DI-624 then to the RT31P2 my uploads drop to 60-218kbps. Wireless to the DI-624 directly to the modem (bypass the RT31P2) uploads are fine. Therefore using two routers really impacts my uploads. The DI-624 is set up just for an access point and doing no routing, no firewall, etc. I've set all PCs to have static IPs and the 2nd router (DI-624) has its IP static as well.

ANY help is greatly appreciated!!!

1) Is QoS enabled or disabled on the RT31P2?

2) Are the MTU settings the same on both routers?

Swap your config. I had similiar issues until I put my RT31P2 Behind my WRT54G.

When it is behind my WRT and I am on the phone it takes exactly 90K and thats it.

QoS is enabled on the RT31P2. and the MTU is 1500 on both routers.

I'll try swapping the units and post results.

You should probably try a test with QoS disabled. That would at least indicate where the problem is.

Swapping the routers will in effect disable QoS anyway, but if you are running a bandwidth intensive application while talking you are going to want to figure out how to have QoS turned on and working correctly.

Edit: You should also try a test with the Voice QoS set to a manual rate rather than having it try to auto-detect. The rate should match the voice quality setting you decide to use.

Furthermore you may decide to additionally implement QoS for NetMeeting. The first choice would be to implement application QoS but that may be impossible because I believe NetMeeting may define the relevant ports dynamically. You could optionally specify a high QoS for the machine that NetMeeting is run from, however you should then disable other Internet applications on that machine during your conference.

Well, first I want to thanks those who posted help. It appears there were no problems with my ISP, Vonage or my configuration, but good old Bill Gates. Although I just re-installed my machine two weeks ago, before updating to SP2 I got hit with a coolwwwsearch browser hijacker. With a Win XP re-install, my problems were solved after many hours of isolating the problem.

Thanks. What's the next frustration?
