Why does your service drop? What device(s) do you have?

Got up and running on the Motorola (behind a D-Link router) last week, with everything working fine. Last night the problems described in this thread started up -- PLUS calls (both in and out) were getting dropped after a minute or so.

Called support this AM (only waited 10 minutes), and Rob seemed VERY familiar with handling this set of problems. He said the Motorala was not communicating / being recognized properly by the server hosting my account -- and their fix-of-choice is now to move the account to another server. If I continue to have problems, they would play with some port-forwarding on the router.

About 2 hours later, got an email from him that the server move was complete. So far everything's working. Definitely a better support experience than many others have reported -- but it's only been a couple of hours.

RE: Stutter tones at beginning of dial tone. He said this has nothing to do with any problem, but was an indication of a waiting voicemail. Sure enough! A feature, not a bug...

Well, Moto arrived today. I quickly walked myself through the steps, and being a gambler, decided to set it up first outside the network. It fired right up, both the netgear and the linksys fired up behind it. Had a dial tone and all computers are online. Haven't tried the notebook yet, but the teenager was out on Xbox live via the WAP so I figure it will work too.

Went to shields up and the 1023 port was open. using the instructions from dslreports, I sent it to the nonexistent IP and stealthed it and rebooted the system. went to pcflank and it showed other ports that it was concerned about. I tried forwarding all them too, but either it was overkill or I screwed it up because when I rebooted I brought the entire house down Embarassed

Well, I went back in and removed everything but 1023, rebooted again, reset the world and so far so good. We've got the long weekend to see if the Moto can take it and how the calls sound.

I've got to box up the Cisco and ship it back. To all new folks, REMEMBER TO ALWAYS KEEP THE ORIGINAL PACKAGING AND EVERYTHING THAT GOES WITH IT. You need that to send one back and get full credit.

Will let you know how we make out and if it survives in front.

If it's wierd and unique, it will happen to me. Got up this morning, we're watching DVDs, I'm installing new software on the laptop and getting downloads via the WAP on the Linksys router.

(Remember my setup: Motorola SB 4100 modem -----> Moto V1005 ---------> Netgear RPS14V2 --------> 1 PC and LinksysBEFW11S4 ------> 3 PCs, Xbox live via WAP and notebook via WAP)

Well, all of a sudden, my cell phone rings. It's my mother-in-law. That's odd. I'm talking to her and then my call waiting beeps and my daughter has a call. Okay. What's going on? I asked her friend why she's calling my cell -- she says she's dialing the house.

Yes, we had lost our Vonage, it had started forwarding to my cell, BUT THE REST OF THE NETWORK DIDN'T CRASH. Well, I can't confirm 100% it didn't, but if my notebook was on, I would think everything else was still functional.

Called Vonage and reported this to them. They were as puzzled as I was. I mean, it's a good thing that the network didn't go with it, but I am sad that the phone crashed. I rebooted the MTA once, then the cable modem, then the MTA again. I did the 80# hung up and got a dial done. The tech guy said that doesn't work for the MTAs, but it worked for me, so I'll keep it in my bag of tricks.

We'll just see how it goes. I really wanted to keep it out there for QOS, which is very good. No beeping, hissing or echoing going on. We've got until Sunday before we decide to bury it behind the netgear.

Happy New Year!

Did anyone ever get a fix for the constant VT1005v hang while under heavy (~40KB/s Up/300KB/s Down) internet load & require reboot issue when used as a router, or did everyone just put it behind a firewall?

I have the latest firmware which Vonage claimed would fix the problem, but no, still hangs. The new firmware finally stealths 99% of what were previously closed ports and disables ICMP pings so it's an improvement, but no fix for the hangs.

Software Version: VT20_01.1.12
Bootrom Version: VT20_01.1.12
Hardware Version: Model: VT1000 Revision: 0 BSP: 1.2/0
Config File Version: 4708776

I seriously think the Motorola device is piece of junk, and is still very much a beta test product. Mines definitely going to be returned, maybe in a year they'll have a firmware that works.

Also Vonage tech support response by email is 3 days, only to get useless information, and 45 mins on hold for telephone support while they transfer you between queues.

Dead Moto (gotta love that):

My MTA is still between the cable modem and the linksys. I had to reboot it today, but that was the first time in at least a week, I think. (And when I rebooted and checked Comcast, sure enough, there was a "scheduled maintenance" in our area message along with instructions on how to cycle the modem.

It's been fairly stable overall. Only problems I'm having is my fax line won't work on the moto but it did on the cisco. However, I've got really weird numbers coming from speed tests, etc. Comcast sent a tech out yesterday but he really didn't know much. said our line was a little hot but that was it. it's been hot for a long time, but my speeds were always 1750/260. now they're all over the map -- 1600/87, 500/100, you name it. Maybe I need to see what firmware version I have. If my ports stealth instead of close, that may help. I don't know.

I do think I'm very much in the minority with the MTA out front, but so far I want to keep trying it there for QOS.

Well the moto was up for 20 hours which was unusual, so I decided to play games with it. I called it from my cell, and the phone rang, great, it works, so without picking up the phone I redialed from my cell. This time it rang, but didn't stop ringing when I cut the call on the cell. So I picked up the phone, and the line was obviously dead, however it then refused to give me a dialtone.

Meanwhile the moto was still acting as an internet router for open network connections, but refused to open new connections, even to http://192.168.102.1:80, so I had to reboot, so much for VT20_01.1.12

So I guess the moral of this story is don't make phone calls to yourself.

Now I'm starting to think the firmware has a slow memory leak, and making the call after 20 hours was enough to fill the memory. That would explain why the open connections with preallocated buffers are fine. It's a shame there's no debug/stats mode, or a debug firmware downloadable.

So far so good here. I've had my moto up running since Friday, no reboots required or any real problems. I've made and received a ton of calls even while doing some serious downloading.

I'm also pleased to see that the moto makes a decent firewall. I just ran some scans on my IP address and as far as the outside world can see I'm stealth.

Here are my particulars

Software Version: VT20_01.1.12
Bootrom Version: VT20_01.1.12
Hardware Version: Model: VT1000 Revision: 0 BSP: 1.2/0

I have Vonage for several months now and I only had problem for about 5 days out of the several months that I have it.

I have the Cisco ata 186 and using Linksys BEFSR41 router, Using port trigering.

When I had problems the calls were droped in the middle of a call and also I would get the fast busy signal and no incomming calls, I went thru all the tech support you all went thru.

They could'nt figure out what was wrong, and to make a long story short I did a trace route to the sip at Vonage and found that I had 30 to 100% data lost before it got to Vonage.

I am on adelphia cable and as most of you who are on any cable braodband, know that cable high speed is not reliable. I forced my modem to give me a new ip by changing the mac addy on my router
and ever since then I haven had a problem.

So by getting a new ip, it changed how my data gets routed and now its more reliable. I hope this info will help some of you since it help me.
