ok.. just got off the phone with Comcast...

It seems that the ip address from comcast is changed to an internal Ip once the Vonage router is connected, hence is why the 192. ya ya ya, is being projected into the ipconfig, network config info for xp, and the Diablo 2 game itself.

Apparently no one can join because my comcast modem (which is not static) has one ip, and my computer is using the internal ip assigned by the Linksys.

Any Ideals?

Yes, this is the common situation. You are going to forward the port from your Comcast assigned address to your Linksys (192.168..) assigned address. You are going to have to tell the Linksys to always assign the same address to your computer. Thus your 192.168.. address will become a static address.

I suggest you visit this site. It can take you through the process. It has screen shots and explanations specific to the RT31P2.

And if you want people to join your game, you're going to have to give them your Comcast IP address...NOT your 192.x.x.x internal IP.

Tks Josh...

I am reading the port forwarding subject that Stephen just sent...

It seems that it makes sense to set up a procedure that will tell the Linksys modem what the Comcast modems Ip is at any given time.

Learning new stuff is cool...lol

To be continued...

Seems that the port forwarding wont work with a non static Ip address and port Triggering needs the start and ending range of the port that the game uses.

So, I have come full circle with this because i dont know what the port ranges of Diablo 2 are and per to Johns original suggestion..

"the first result at google for "diablo2 ports" has the answer right there. you might want to try searching next time if you don't want to wait on hold.
as far as will it work, read the explanation of port forwarding which is on that page where you...forward the ports. it's a good explanation and is better than I can say it. if it's not obvious, this is where you set up applications and games so other users can connect to you through your firewall (router) which would otherwise be blocking these ports. by putting those ports and your computers internal ip address on that page, the router knows not to block traffic going to those ports and to send it to the computer with ip address 192.168.15.xxx.
I don't know why you think it will open all your ports to the outside world. if it did then what's the point of putting in those specific ports? you would just be able to say "open" or "closed" to put it simplistically.

1) You are going to tell your linksys router to always give your PC the same address in the 192.168.x.x range every time it request an address. http://www.portforward.com/linksys/RT31P2-dhcp.htm

2) you are going to tell your linksys router to send any packets that come in on ports 6112 - 6119 to the address you gave your PC in step number 1. http://www.portforward.com/linksys/RT31P2-portforwarding.htm

3) you are going to tell your friends to connect on the address Comcast gave you (this address will change over time, once you get everything else working post a request asking about DDNS)

Problem solved... Smile

I was giving out the internal IP address which worked for the other puters on my home hub, but outside users needed my non static Comcast external IP

Thanks for all that submitted help for a newbie lost in the woods.

Learning is good, if it doesn't kill you, it will make you stronger.
