Deciding whether to take the Vonage plunge, and have Comcast as my cable provider. I see several topics regarding Comcast problems. Are these equipment problems, or are they ISP induced problems (prot blockage, etc)? Apparently Comcast will be introducing a similar service next year, so I'm wondering what to do.
Also, are there problems with voice quality, conversion speed, download/upload problems? Any advice would be helpful.
Thanks

I am west of Chicago and use Comcast. I have been using Vonage for about a month now. My broadband speeds are a pretty steady 240K up and 1450k down. Comcast has been pretty stable for me lately. For me Vonage works very well over Comcast. My wife has never complained about voice quality and I consider that a pretty good test. The only complaints I have with Vonage are a couple of minor incompatibilities between the Cisco ATA 186 and my cordless phone system. The message waiting lamp on my phone doesn't work with the ATA (the two use different message waiting protocals) and there is a timing issue between my answering machine and the ATA (after a message is left and the caller hangs up neither the answering machine nor the ATA will release until the answering machine times out).
All in all Vonage works good for me and very well over Comcast. |

Been using Vonage via Comcast for about 2 months now. I also saw that Comcast was going to roll out their own service, but still went with Vonage.
I had some problems initially - occasionally would not have a dial tone. That was the only problem I ever had, connections were always clear, and the volume was actually louder than my landline, (verizon).
About a month ago, I switched routers from Network Everywhere to Linksys, (although I think Linksys makes NE). Since then, I have never had a problem with Vonage. Never. Conx always clear, always have a dialtone, etc... I'm downgrading my verizon svc this month, (but will keep a landline for back up). |

Been with Comcast for years, since @home days and with Vonage since beginning of July 2003. No problems. |

I've had vonage with comcast for almost a year in both Maryland and Califormia. I loved being able to just bring my equipment to the other state and keep the same phone number. When I go back, none of my friends will have to learn a new number!
I have been having the some of the problems that others are trying to hash out. Since I am never on the phone for more than a few minutes at a time, I get all this information from my wife. If she is on the phone for over a hour, her voice quits transmitting, although she can hear the other person very clearly. She then hangs up and has to call back, but something doesn't clear completely because the same situation occurs after just a few minutes. She keeps telling me that we need to go back to Verizon or SBC. I just keep telling her that when that happens, it is time to get off the phone.
We do keep a cell phone for those few times when Comcast service, or the electricity goes out. |
