After combing through the posts on this site, I made the decision that I want to keep my router separate from my phone adapter. The biggest reason being the ability to control the firmware. Secondly, I didn't want to be tied to the Vonage hardware if I don't like the service.
With that said, I purchased a Linksys WRT54GS today along with the Linksys PAP2 phone adapter. I noticed that some people are running other adapters with this router. Will I notice a quality difference by buying a different adapter? If I buy directly from Vonage, I get the combined unit for free. Can I run it behind my new router since it has a router built in? Will I be happiest just running the PAP2 behind the linksys wrt54gs?
Thanks in advance for all of the help.

well you already made your decision, why the second guessing? there are only a few Vonage devices out there, and 2 are routers which you said you didn't want...at first...but then you might want it...so what is it that you really want? you got a very popular router, and looking through this site will show you some good ways to configure it for qos, so you aren't missing anything, and are really gaining by having it in front with its superior qos management. you could run the Vonage rt31p2 router behind the wrt if you want to go back to square one and pay more money for no reason. if you're looking for confirmation that what you did was ok, then here it is. fwiw, sveasoft alchemy is one of the more popular firmware flavors on this forum, as you probably already know. |

Thanks for the super fast response!! I guess I was asking for 2 reasons - 1) Vonage is giving away the RT31P2 for free, so there is no cost (PAP2 is also free after rebate) and 2) I saw that some people were running the RT31P2 behind their WRT54GS and I didn't know if there is an advantage to this configuration over the PAP2.
With that said, I am assuming to get the most out of the WRT54GS's QOS capabilities (combined with alchemy) I should put the PAP2 behind the router. Is this correct.

that's your only option if you want to use anything besides the pap2 with your internet connection. and the rt31p2 is "free" after a $30 activation fee and $10 shipping charge. |
