Ok. But don't think I have any firewall software. It is just meand my relatively new Macintosh laptop. Unless Mac or Microsoft added something in an upgrade during the last month, I don't have anything like this. Other question would be if the ISP added a similar block. If so, any idea how I would get around that or what kind of information I should ask them for? They haven't been very helpful, but am willing to try again.

PostPosted: Tue Mar 22, 2005 3:00 am    Post subject: WRT54GP2 "Unable to Access Router" Reply with quote Back to top

I have been having the same difficulties in accessing the web based administration pages of the wireless router (WRT54GP2), I receive "Unable to access router" - I have tried both FireFox and IE.

However, I did a ping on the IP address that it gave (via ipconfig) and got 4 replies. I then powered off the cable modem (Motorola SurfBoard Cable Modem) and got nothing.

Here's my guess - the WRT54GP2 is only acting as a passive device which is why I can get to the internet but not to the interface of the router. I worked with Linksys for a few hours attempting a variety of things (most of been mentioned in this post topic). They finally suggested that I return it to CompUSA (local store) and get a new one. Again, just a guess, the load (image, IOS, whatever you want to call it) is garbage and does not work.

The reason I say this is because I know a few people that have this same router and it works fine. I'll be taking mine back tomorrow and getting a new one - I'll keep you posted on what a new one brings.

If you should find out anything please drop me a line. Thanks.

Good luck. Hope it works for you. My setup worked perfectly with this router until Vonage did something called a "code update." Now 2 routers later, I still can't get it to work.
I'm about to give up on Vonage even though I like the product as Customer Service has completely failed me. Between getting an amazing number of busy signals, waiting on hold for over an hour before getting my call dropped, the multiple "technicians" who have been very nice but can't solve my problem or the "supervisor" who was looking into my problem and would call me right back (now 72 hours later and not a sign of her or recognition in the Vonage database that she even talked to me) I am very close to trying another company. I know that this forum is supposed to be about pro Vonage things, but I wonder whether with over 500,000 lines they are stretched beyond their means and we -- the consumer -- are getting the short end of the stick. If anyone has any suggestions that would allow me to stay with Vonage, I'd love to hear them... Otherwise suggestions on who else to try...

There is nothing wrong with the router or phone adaptor. You cannot access the Vonage setup page with just the adaptor plugged in to the wan port. You must run another line into one of the other ethernet jacks from your hub or switch to get access to it. The phone adaptor actually has 2 IP addresses. One is given to it by your dhcp server on your firewall and one is the 192.168.15.1 IP address. The DHCP given address is used for outside access but the 15.1 address is the router address. Reason it comes up as not being see is that you don't have anything connected to get in through that IP.

Its kind of hard to explain cause I don't have the terminology down. Should look like this:

Code:

wall ---- cable modem ----- wrt router ----- wan of Vonage
                                            |        \-------- ethernet port of Vonage
                                            |--------other PC's

Mr Mike,

I think you mis-understand, I cannot get access to the router itself (at 15.1) let alone the Voip page within the administration pages.

I am not quite sure I understand you diagrame but here is how mine is cabled:

Coax from wall to cable modem
Ethernet from cable modem to internet port of router
Ethernet from PC to ethernet port 1 of router
Standard phone wire from phone to phone port 1 of the router.

Code:

Cable                          Router
Modem--(ethernet)--Internet Port
                                Ethernet Port 1--(ethernet)-------PC
                                Phone Port 1-----(phone cable)--Phone

Are saying that I need to run the router that Vonage sent into one of my ethernet ports? I am not sure I understand your 'WAN of Vonage' and 'Ethernet port of Vonage' terminology.

Yeah, if you look on the back of the Vonage box you'll see a WAN port and then other ports, they usually are numbered. The wan in port is where you would connect the incoming internet (i can't remember if that labelled internet on the device? its not in front of me so I don't know).

Sounds like you using the Vonage box as your firewall and router, right?

If you go to start, run and type cmd, then enter ipconfig what does it say for your gateway on your pc? That IP address is the IP you should be entering in the web browser. If that IP isn't the 15.1 address then that is where the problem is. It sounds like a routing problem and not necessarily a hardware problem. The router gets an IP address from the cable modem. But it also has an IP address of its own which is usually the 15.1 address, but if gateway from ipconfig says its something else then try that.

Coax from wall to cable modem which is right (obviously) to get your network access.

Ethernet from cable modem to internet port of router which is right to give your router an IP address from the cable provider. The router then should be dishing out IP addresses to anything connected to it.

Ethernet from PC to ethernet port 1 of router which is right, you have internet access through that pc right?

As I stated in an earlier post. I will swap out the router with a new one - I am doing this as the WLAN light never came on the WRT54GP2 (by default the wireless should avertise itself out of the box). I will try again tonight and keep ya posted.

FYI - the WRT54GP2 (wireless router) is something that I purchased to replace the RT31P2 that came with Vonage.

Thanks for your feedback.

This is all very helpful. Can anyone tell me how to get the IP address (as discussed above) on a Mac -- no start, run, etc.

I am not sure what OS version you have but....(as I recall)

MAC OSx - you would go to System Preferences-Network Config-Options

From there you would need to select you connection (i.e. LAN).

I am not a frequent MAC user so I hope this helps.

Eureaka! My first WRT54GP2 was faulty, traded it for another and it came up fine. Called Vonage with the new MAC address (only took 15 minutes of hold time) and now everything works as it should.

I hope this helps.
