PostPosted: Sat Mar 19, 2005 12:49 pm    Post subject: No Dial Tone - What Else? Reply with quote Back to top

I got Vonage in January, and have had mixed success. It has worked pretty well over the past 2 months, but over the past couple of days, I have constantly been losing my dial tone.

Here is my setup:
Comcast High Speed Internet
Motorola Surfboard Cable Modem
Modem directly into RT31P2
RT31P2 into computer
Phone plugged into Phone Port 1

The lights on the RT31P2 are as follows
Power is on
Ethernet 2 and 3 are on (I have a Tivo going into Port 2)
Both phone lights blink at the same time every 5 seconds, then go off
Internet light is on (blinking very rapidly)

I have tried unplugging the router and plugging it back in a million times. Customer service is a joke.

Someone help!

while on the status page at http://192.168.15.1 keep refreshing it and see what it says while it's going through the blinking. shouldn't be too hard since they're blinking so often.
and if you haven't yet, this is the recommended reset procedure:
unplug all phone cords, unplug power, push and hold reset button, plug power back in while holding reset button, keep holing reset button for 15 seconds after powering back on. keep an eye on the power light, and don't plug the phones back in (or power the box off) until it stops blinking.
out of curiosity, why aren't you using ethernet ports 1 and 2 instead of 2 and 3?

It seems that jrstrike is not going to make a return appearance. I've had this problem before and I dare say so have most of us. The fact is that if the RT31P2 is reset properly, there will be a dial tone. It is easy to mis-connect the phone to the RJ-11 jacks. It must be done slowly and carefully until the characteristic "click" is heard telling us that the phone is now properly connected.

It is also very easy to try to operate the router before the rebooting operation is complete. Since the ATA is the last thing to be rebooted, it is easy to jump the gun while the ATA is still non-functional.

There are several Vonage help knowledge base articles that do not say anymore than what I have just said. But just for the record:

http://www.vonage.com/help_knowledgeBase_article.php?article=458&category=47

and

http://www.vonage.com/help_knowledgeBase_article.php?article=466&category=47

and finally

http://www.vonage.com/help_knowledgeBase_article.php?article=425

I hope this is of some help to somebody.
