When my house was being built, I lived with my friends for a couple of months. They had Sympatico. While at their home, I wanted a high speed connection too, and asked if I could have cable installed. They agreed to it, and I got a high speed cable modem. We did some tests. We both went to the same website at the same time, and then we started downloading. Mine finished way before theirs. We went to a few more websites to test this, and each and every time, Videotron won for speed.

Just last year my friends did the Voip test on their internet connection. It came back saying they would only get cell phone quality, whereas mine said it would be as if I was living next door to the person I was calling. That did it! They finally made up their minds to leave Bell and switch to Videotron. They now have Vonage too and have experienced no problems.

Speaking of caps - Bell puts a cap on email. If you have more than 5 megs of emails, Bell rejects any new ones. Videotron does not do this. Their Sympatico connection was not always so bad. 5 years ago it was excellent. As each year went by, it seemed to slow down more and more. They also had trouble with the customer service that they received on their Sympatico account.

As of last week you can do it. I have my land line set to deactivate at the end of this month while my DSL will continue.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this: I obviously want my Vonage service throughout out my house. I was thinking that if I connected my router to one of the dsl filters Bell gave me and then plugged the filter into the wall, would that let me use the dead POTS wiring to power my other jacks? or would it still damage my router? If the filter does keep the dsl signal from coming through, then it should work. Any advice?

CRTC OKAYS BELL "DRY COPPER" DSL OFFERING: In Telecom Order
2005-144, the CRTC approves an amendment to Bell Canada's
Gateway Access tariff that will allow competitors to use Bell
unbundled loops to provide high-speed access to end customers
who don't subscribe to any voice service over the loop. Bell
says it has had "many requests for this capability."

I have all my services with Bel:
Sympatico
Mobility
Landline
ExpressVu
As of 04 May 05 I moved to a "dry loop" which resulted in me keeping my DSL Ultra line with no Bell landline.
There was no interruption in service as feared. This only resulted from due diligence with dealing with Bell Customer Service. You have to search and sift to find the right number to call. Plus determining who is right at sympatico and bell because both say they can accomplish this task. Not so true! Anyways I was lucky and had a diligent rep from Bell who accutally researched the proper procedure and called me back with the info ( although I only got the message because I was already connected to the right people after spending a couple hours bouncing from dept to dept ).
Next to go is mobility!
BTW dsl is better the ncable for other reasons then just speed, latency. If you like to game then latency is more of factor then speed. I prefer my dsl at 4 Meg down speed over my cable down speed of 8 Meg that I had for couple of months when I was travelling. My pings during my games are much lower and more constant where as with cable ping rate would fluctuate quite a bit to highs and a few lows.
As far as wiring your house up...no need for a filter with dsl anymore. I have my dsl modem in basement where line from outside demarc comes in and is terminated on a phone jack. Wires from this jack are ran in parallel out to other jacks in house.
I just installed some structured wiring and have bell wiring jack in basement go to dsl modem and from ther it is all my copper wiring.
Anyways I am rambling for my first post.
Smile

I've had dry dsl for a while now and the price is exactly the same as it was before I got rid of the land line. I've also switched from Vonage to primus now. The price is substantially better and so is the sound quality. Of course the fact that Vonage has terrible customer service didn't help their cause any. That's one of the reasons I was dying to leave bell in the first place. Anyway, I've been on Primus for a few weeks now and have not had any problems.
