I couldn't find this anywhere else in the forums, so I'll start the thread. Since I'm having trouble with dropped calls and horrible quality (at the highest voice quality setting) I would like to know if this is the cause of my problem.

My phone adapter is behind my firewall. I have opened inbound UDP ports 5060-5061 and 10000-20000 to be NATed to my phone adapter's static internal IP address.

Why do I need to open ports 53, 69, and 123 in my firewall?

Port 53 means a DNS server - why would my phone adapter need to be a DNS server?

Port 69 is the TFTP service - isn't that commonly used to spread viruses and worms? NO WAY will I open that port.

Port 123 is NTP service - a time server? I can understand being clients to all these services, but to expose these services seems utterly rediculous. What if I ran a DNS server behind my firewall and already had port 53 directed to that server?

Who said you needed to open 53, 69 and 123?

The instructions. Smile

It's also in the Help section on the main Vonage site - search for "firewall".

I did not have to forward any ports on my firewall to the Linksys ATA. Have you run the Voip Speed Test? http://www.vonage-forum.com/voip-speed-test.html

Yes, I have. Speed doesn't seem to be the issue.

Are you using Qos in the RT31P2? and on your Firewall? Have you tried to just use the RT31P2 for testing without your firewall?

I don't have anything behind the phone adapter. No, I haven't tried testing without the firewall becuase the whole network depends on it.

Besides, that is not the point. I'm asking about security issues with strange ports, not about traffic shaping!

most people don't have to open ports because the connection is established by the adaptor. 53, not sure. 69, for firmware updates. 123 I believe for voicemail timestamping, but not totally sure there.
at any rate, I don't think any of this is the cause of your poor call quality. out of curiosity, have you tried it without forwarding ports?
also, pasting your detailed results from testyourvoip.com is helpful is diagnosing these sort of problems.

Which is funny, since you started this thread by saying:

My phone adapter is behind my firewall.

So if you want to know if having your Vonage adapter behind the firewall is causing your problem, a common-sense test would be to temporarily bypass the firewall.

You stated you had an issue with calls dropping and bad quality and that is why I asked about Qos.

I am just trying to assist. I use a linux firewall with Traffic shaping and had issues with the RT31P2 behind my firewall but apparently you are not interested.
