ToddlerTN: Yes, you're right. There is a potential #3, but only if you're not careful. Suppose Vonage were to keep on providing the ATA and only supporting the ATA, but on the web site have a place where you can generate user/password for an alternative sip login with huge big "UNSUPPORTED" and "DO NOT PHONE FOR SUPPORT" warnings, then they can answer #3 calls with 'Too bad, plug the ATA back in". Sure, some people will still try and call no matter how many "I agree" things they have to click to get a password, but you can close the call really quick. I for one, would be absolutely thrilled to have this as a service alternative for Vonage.

Trying to support third party ATA/IP-phone/IP-PBX etc configurations is a nightmare. There are so many ways that somebody can screw up the configuration on the device. So don't provide support for them. But that doesn't mean they have to be prohibited for the people that can self-support and don't need or want hand-holding.

But from an economic business model, that is not a moneymaker for Vonage, and ultimately Vonage is in the business of making money. At $14.95 or $24.95 a month, Vonage generates revenue through a high volume of customers who just want to pick up their phone and dial a call, and that's what Vonage provides. What you're asking for would never fall under a plan marketed towards people watching American Idol or Wife Swap. What you want is more appropriate for a business plan, not a residential plan, and if you had to pay for a business plan to get it, people who think they want that would suddenly become a lot less interested.

Sure, and they said the same things about AT&T and the compulsory company supplied phones. "Nobody would want to *buy* their own phone now, would they?" etc etc.

All I want is for Vonage to add an extra drop-down menu box on the 'features' page called 'Advanced SIP login'. Say tht it is unsupported and for advanced users only. Require them to agree that it will not be supported. Require them to acknowledge that they can't phone customer service about it if they use it. Require them to acknowledge that if they have any problems, they have to plug the ATA back in. After doing that, give them a custom user/password and leave it at that.

Its not hard. It doesn't need new plans. Just because somebody has a nice IP phone at home, that doesn't mean that their home calling patterns are any different to any other home. It certainly doesn't mean that they will suddenly switch to having a business-like calling pattern. It certainly does't justify saying that the home user with roughly 200 minutes per month of call activity should buy their $299/month business plan with 12,000 minutes of time.

So what, does Vonage employ call blocking to physically prevent those customers from calling customer service?

How many times would you have someone arguing, "But the problem isn't my unsupported device, it's got to be on Vonage's end, but they won't help me," even though that's exactly what they agreed to?

Vonage has too many other things to work on, like offering things that benefit ALL customers and attract new business. They're not going to waste resources trying to implement something that isn't going to generate revenue.

And a business plan isn't just about calling patterns or minutes used.

You can keep asking for it, but I'm just telling you that your request doesn't fit into Vonage's economic model for the forseeable future, and it's as simple as that.

Well, it looks like we disagree. I think they're being short-sighted. You can apologize for them as much as you want, but I'm entitled to my opinion.

What's an "insecure" port?

Back in my day, we called these privileged ports because only the superuser could bind to them. That is, ports below 1024.

BTW, these ports only need to be open for outbound connection.

LOL, check my sig. This is the first time I've ever been called a Vonage apologist.

You absolutely have the right to your opinion, whether you're correct or not.
