I called home from work and noticed that there was delay when I would speak. I'm using cable modem. I have not changed any settings myself. Does anyone know why the delay happens? Is there a problem with my ISP or router? I'm using RT31P2 router.

thanks

I get the same delay when I call home.. It's odd- when you search the forum or Vonage site about echos it always refers to echo when calling out from home - and that it's related to handset volume and house wiring. What is it that causes the my voice to echo when I'm calling my own house?

Well, I know you don't want to hear this but here goes:
http://www.vonage.com/help_knowledgeBase_article.php?article=266

One common thread in everyone's answer is, "When I called home". Bad PSTN wiring is usually the culprit. All PSTN phones have delay and echoes. Most people don't notice it. I had the same problem with a friend. I wound up buying her a Panasonic with echo reduction circuitry. Never had a problem again with her number.

I don't mind hearing that, because that's not my problem.

All of my wiring is CAT5e and it's consistent no matter which phone I use, even if I use a headset. Certain callers complain about it more than others, but oddly enough, people who call me from a cell phone (who have complained when calling me from their landline) say they don't hear the echo.

Mobile phone networks have built in echo cancellation.

Nokia Press Release for New Product (1998) wrote:
With the mobile phone becoming the preferred phone for voice communications, subscribers expect high voice quality when talking on their mobile phone. Some mobile phones can introduce acoustic echo (the sound from the earpiece couples into the microphone). This problem is not at all evident to the mobile's user -- only to the person speaking to them. Although EFR provides enhanced speech quality in GSM networks, EFR mobiles could still suffer from acoustic echo problems.

To provide excellent quality, Nokia recommends using its acoustic echo cancellation (AEC) feature together with EFR in GSM networks.

Echos occur because the other parties speech is being transmitted back to them. Normally this happens so quickly it is undetectable. However when latency is high the problem becomes apparent. This can be solved by using a telephone on your end that acoustically cancels out the other parties speech before it is retransmitted or by reducing latency. It could also be cancelled out by the service provider as is done for cell phones.

That is certainly the most common cause, but not the only cause. I'll elaborate on the headset, because it's got a mute switch on it that disengages the microphone completely, and even testing it that way I'm told the echo is there. So if they can't even hear me speaking, it's obviously not sound from the earpiece coupling back into the microphone.

ToddlerTN: Do you get the echo when you have a single phone plugged into the adapter?

Well I figured I'd come back to complete the story (hopefully).

For the past few days, Vonage has been perfect. The people who used to say the echo was so bad they couldn't stand it now say that it sounds "normal" (which is kind of sad to think "normal" is now a compliment). But they all say there's no echo at all, no dropouts, nothing funky at all. What changed, I have no idea...I'm just glad it did, and I'll accept that.
