PostPosted: Thu Mar 17, 2005 5:13 pm    Post subject: Setting up the RT31P2 behind an existing WRT54G wireless? Reply with quote Back to top

Hi all,

Here's a question for you.

Should i run the setup CD first on my wireless laptop, and configure the RT31P2 router via ethernet cable, then power it all down and set it up in the way AspectTech has it elsewhere in the forums?

So far i have been relying on the WRT54G to configure the RT31 automatically, and so far have had no luck whatsoever. Am i missing a crucial step? I was leery of using the setup CD so far because the RT31 is not going to be the main router in this case.

The way i have to set it up (because the other roommates both have wireless laptops) is:

Internet Arrow Cable Modem Arrow WRT54G (into RT31P2 via WGA54G Wireless Game Adapter so it can be in my room) Arrow Phone

If i am missing the obvious please call me a dumbass, my girlfriend has been waiting for me to get this working for 2 weeks now.

Tosh

I can tell you how I have my wrt54g and rt31p2 hooked up. The wrt54g is hooked to the cable modem and the rt31p2 is hooked to the wrt54g. I changed the local ip address on the rt to 192.168.1.2 so it is on same subnet as wrt54g (192.168.1.1) Set the rt for static ip adress 192.168.1.10, leave subnet alone and set gateway to address of wrt54g (192.168.1.1)and turn off dhcp on the rt also. type ipconfig from dos prompt on your computer and see what dns servers are, put these in rt where it asks for dns entries. run 1 ethernet cable from wrt54g to Internet port on rt and then run another cable from any lan port on the wrt54g to any lan port on the rt.

This is the procedure.

On your WRt54g, set the ip to 192.168.15.254 and turn OFF DHCP.

Attach the RT31p2 to your cable modem/dsl via the internet port.

Attach your WRt54g (not the internet port, a regular port) to any of the ports on your rt31p2.

Connect a PC to another port on your rt31p2.

When your computer gets a dhcp address (should be 192.168.15.x)
on your computer, point your browser at 192.168.15.1 and make any other fine tuning settings you need.

Your good to go.

rramsey,

With that configuration, can you use the LAN ports on the WRT54G as a switch? In other words, can you patch a PC to the WRT54G and have that PC grab an IP from the RT31P2 and talk to the rest of your network?

It seems like you should be able to, but I remember someone saying it didn't work that way for them.

Basically the WRT54G turns into a basic switch... From my RT31p2 (which controls DHCP) I have one port going to my office PC, and the other port going to the WRT54G whcih is fully loaded, which goes out to a 24 port Dell switch in the garage that has 15 connections. All machines recieve DHCP now from the RT device.

Yeah thanks, that's how I figured it should work. I was trying to talk someone through that configuration a while back and he swore he couldn't talk to the rest of his network that way. I've always wondered why it didn't work for that guy...oh well.

Do a search on connecting wrt54g and rt31p2, most people have better luck having their wrt54g hooked directly to the cable modem and then the rt31p2 hooked to the wrt54g. Try the procedure I have outlined above and see if that works. If you are having a problem trying to coonect to your rt31p2 to manage it, then you need to unplug it, hold down the reset button in the back with a pen and plug it back in while still holding down the button for about 30 seconds. This will reset the rt to default. You should then be able to http to 192.168.15.1 to manage the rt.

Thanks for your help. I finally decided it was causing too many problems and swapped it out for the wireless version. Finally all my devices are playing nice with each other. Keep my fingers crossed.

I have switched my routers around, and you can definitely see a difference as far as the download bandwidth. It's much faster now, though I can't connect to the RT router anymore, unless I connect my computer to one of its ports. I am going to do what you said above, so that both computers are on the same subnet. I understand why you connected the 1st cable between a port of the WRT and the Internet port on the RT, though why do you have to connect a 2nd cable between any lan ports on both routers? What does this accomplish? Thanks.
