Thanks for the forum !

Thinking about signing up for Vonage service but have a question about receiving calls within the local service area. Let's say I have vonage at home via my broadband cable.. My wife is at work down the street and wants to call home.. Vonage says that she would dial an 11 digit number even if local.. I don't understand how that could be since if you call a local number in our area using 11 digits a recording comes on saying something like "you don't need to dial the area code when making a call to this number". Even so, surely it wouldn't be long distance for her to call home.. right ??

Appreciate any clarification on this..

You have to do 11 digit dialing for all calls from Vonage. I could be wrong, but I believe that is true of all VOIP carriers at this time. In fact, here in area code 847 north and west of Chicago, SBC has us using 11 digit dialing for all calls. Been that way for almost two years. The day will come, and in the not too distant future, when everyone will be doing 11 digit dialing. SBC already has announced plans for 11 digit dialing for area codes 773 and 630 in the Chicagoland area. Exclamation

Thanks Oldphoneguy ... I understand that the 11 digits are required to call out on Vonage even if making a local call.. But are you saying that a non-Vonage person using a POTS line in the local area needs to dial 11 digits to ring into a Vonage users located in that same local area ?

No - a person dialing a Vonage line from a telco POTS line in the same area code would dial as normal for the area code (Probably 7 digit dialing).

Yes I sure hope that is right. I mean that if you are calling from a regular non-Vonage line to a Vonage number both within the same area code do you have to dial the area code? That would peeve off many people who would be calling the Vonage line.

People don't have to dial 11 digits to call a Vonage number. They dial just as they would any other line. Their phone can't tell the difference between VoIP and another POTS phone.
