Greetings all,
I purchased Vonage VoIP package few days ago and it`s somewhere in the mail... so, in the mean time i have the question that bothers me the most.

What is the roughly estimated upstream/downstream bandwidth usage for Vonage VoIP? I searched around, but couldn`t find defiinte answer to that... quiet often people are confusing kbps with kb/sec. I`m pretty sure that i have enough bandwidth to handle it... but what happens of someone calls while i am hosting dedicated server Eek Should i just let it ring? Confused

My connection - Optima on line, averaging 7-8mbps down and ~1mbps up pretty much all the time.

Thanks in advance for any information.

Cheers!

With that bandwidth, you'll be fine. Vonage in highest quality uses about 90K up and 90K down. You've got room for about 10 Vonage calls at that bandwidth.

Thank you for the prompt reply kenn,

By 90k you mean 90kbps... which is a little bit over 1kb/sec, correct?

If that`s the case, i have nothing to worry about Smile

That's correct. Each call is less than 10% of your stated upload bandwidth. Look to the left side of the screen and run the "VOIP SPEED TEST" listed for a visual look at your bandwidth.

One more question, while we are at it Smile

I have rather complicated...well to some extent..setup at home. Two PC`s hardwired to Dlink-704P and Linksys wireless switch connected to Dlink as well - thats for laptop. In router firewall i can only authorize 4 DHCP adresses and all of them taken... wireless uses 2. DHCP filtering is enabled. So...that forces me to put Vonage service between Modem and the router, which will dedicate max bandwidth to Vonage. Basically...my question is...is it worth the trouble of getting 8 port router and putting Vonage on the network behind the router... so it will not have priority to bandwidth?

I know, i am a little paranoid. Hosting is more important to me then phone lines Wink ... phone is for mrs..she talks for hours hehe.

Ivan... I too have Optimum Online. Everyone is correct.. you have plenty of bandwidth to handle Vonage calls without resorting to any type of bandwidth management.

This means that you can and should put the Vonage adapter behind your router.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say that your firewall only authorizes 4 DHCP addresses. That just sounds odd. If that's the case, then yes, you should get something else because now you have more than 4 network devices.

The port forwarding and other router features on the ATA from Vonage suck and you wouldn't want to use them for your hosting.

Thanks for your reply plyons.

In the filter of my router only room for 4 DCHP adresses. I guess that`s what you get for 4 ports. Wireless switch and laptop are taking 2, 1 for each and other 2 PC`s remaining two. I guess you are right, i should get 8 port router.

Is it possible to open all ports on that Vonage device? Meaning not to use any filtering? Or it`s not disareable?

Thanks.

Hey something's not right about that. There's no way your router is limited to 4 DHCP addresses. Check the manual. What model is it?
