No doubt, routers that have wireless capabilities also have a lot of other nice features, which I certainly do make use of routinely.

It's the wireless part that bothers me - too damn slow and generally unreliable, at least in my house, which is old 2 story construction. So yeah - I disable it.

That's fine, but you're missing my point. I'm not using wireless, and I didn't buy the WRT54G for the wireless features.

I bought it because the third-party support makes it the best router for $50, period. The QoS has improved my entire network performance, including Vonage calls.

So turn off the wireless and it's still the best router you can buy for $50.

I don't know what's wrong with the wireless on your unit. I have the WRT54GS (Speedbooster) and run 54 Meg on my home wireless network very nicely. Even at 11 Meg, its faster than anything you'll get off the broadband connection.

I have a 3 story house and boosted my output to 200 mW with the Sveasoft firmware and I can surf everywhere and from my neighbors on either side too.

Wireless is only troublesome if left unsecured.

Allow me explain myself about wireless part. It`s not like i don`t like the concept, it is convinient, i host dedicated servers and it doesn`t really mix well with wireless connection. I do understand your point about disabling wireless and having everything hardwired. As far as price goes, yes it is cheaper your way... but Linksys i got was only 75 bucks from my guy.. vs 100 in compusa... which is pretty good deal and hard to pass Smile

Cheers!

You make no sense with statements like that, but I'll quit arguing. If for whatever reason having wireless features on your router freaks you out to the point that you'd rather pay more money for an inferior product, then I'm sure you'll be happy with the BEFSR81. If you ever decide you want another one, let me know and I'll dig it out of my junk pile and make you a heck of a deal.

Apparently you have difficulty reading what i wrote... "it doesn`t really mix well with wireless connection" which part of this statement is not understandable. I said wireless connection and not wireless features.
It is not neccessary to be rude either. Having 300 posts + doesn`t make you more knowledgable and doesn`t give you any additional credits for having attitude like that. Let`s put it this way, i moderate forums in which you wouldn`t last a day Wink .. So please drop the attitude.

Thanks.

Look, when you say "I don't want that router because it also has wireless features, and wireless networking doesn't mix well with my dedicated servers," I'm sorry but that simply makes no sense.

I'm not trying to be rude, just pointing out that the presence of wireless features, or even running a wireless network, could not possibly interfere with your dedicated servers or any other devices running over Cat5.

Toddler:

I really am not inclined to get into an argument about which router is better or worse. We all have our preferences, and mostly the differences are fairly small across brands. If you like yours, great! I like mine too.

Kenn:

There is really nothing wrong with my wireless at all, except that I do a lot of large file transfers on the LAN, and 11 or even 84 just doesn't cut it when I can get about 200 on CAT6 on Gigabit adapters. On 600 MB + transfers, this matters, which is why I personally wired the whole house (major pain). Most people don't need to do this, and wireless can be a very viable option for them.

On the WAN side, wireless speed is fine, except that it occasionally, inexplicably would abruptly drop the connection and then a few minutes later restore it. And yeah, I do know how to troubleshoot this problem, spent many hours doing that, and finally just got tired of trying to track it down - not worth the hassle. This is a very common complaint about wireless for many people, and in my case may be related to the lath & plaster construction of my house, some guy 8 miles away on a ham radio, or the phases of the moon for all I know. You can only screw around with signal strength meters for so long before you get bored.

Ok man, let call it a tie, all boils down to personal preferences... a group hug? Cool
