I've never seen a DHCP server that makes you actually put in the specific IP addresses it may serve. It's always a range, typically defined as x # of addresses beginning with aaa, or any address between aaa and bbb. But I guess anything is possible. It's your router.

Anyway, you should be happy enough with the BEFSR81 you ordered.

I have the same exact model and it should require no port forwarding or any special setup for Vonage on Optimum Online.

Just plug and talk.

If you have any setup issues with it, please send me a private message here or email me ( plyons AT optonline.net ). Given that we have nearly identical setups I'm sure I could solve your issues quickly.

Good luck.

My guess is they are similar, if not identical.

I don't know - I just looked the the specs for the existing router, and I can't see any reason to not just drop a hub on one of the ethernet ports and do it that way. The hub will give you additional ports, and you can attach the Vonage device to one of them, and a PC to another.

Am I missing something here?

No man, you are not missing anything here Smile , Hub would probably do too. But too late now, router is shipped out, arriving tomorrow Smile

Cheers!

Don't despair... at least with the eight port router you'll have less clutter, and since these LInksys boxes are ubiquitous, we'll all know what your setup pages look like if you have an issue in the future!

80 bucks, no big deal. That way i can set everything up behind the router and be done with it. Smile

Thanks again. Will let you know about my experiances with Vonage in about 2 days. Package still on the road somewhere Cool

Cheers!

Hey I have a BEFSR81 in a box somewhere because it wasn't that great. I replaced it with a WRT54G which you can get from Staples this week for $42. It's the Wireless-G router that also runs third-party firmware, and I got it for the awesome QoS features. It has made a big difference in my entire network performance. I don't see where you need 8 ports anyway, so this may be a cheaper, better solution for you.

Just did a few speed tests...

http://tinypic.com/29bpxy

http://tinypic.com/29bpzm

First one is NYC Speakeasy

Second is Vonage meter. Where is this server located? Just curios.

@TodlerTN

Thanks for info... but i`m not a big friend of wireless routers. Smile

I have to agree. Wireless is really troublesome.

LOL...how is wireless troublesome? You do know it can be disabled, right?

The point of that router is the third-party firmware which opens up all kinds of features that can't be found on anything else for $50. Like PPTP server, SIP server/gateway, even Asterisk can be run on the WRT54G. And of course the original reason I mentioned it, the QoS that blows everything else out of the water.

But I understand, if wireless is more than you can handle, then the rest of the stuff would be way over your head.
