New Vonage customer, bandwidth usage questions.

You could always put the Vonage router first, put your existing router into the Vonage router's DMZ, and disable QoS on the Vonage router.

That will keep it from making phone call data priority and will forward all incoming traffic to your existing router.

Just a suggestion.

That's not at all what he's saying:

Clearly he thinks his DHCP is limited to 4 addresses, which he is then assuming is because he only has 4 ports.

None of it makes sense, of course, which is why he is here with a problem.

You're right - I missed that. I wonder what filter he is referring to here? Every router I've ever seen has the ability to dispense at least 50 (if not more) unique DHCP addresses on the LAN.

Anyway - that said - it might not even be needed. Just put the Vonage device in the router's DMZ - the device has it's own IP anyway. This assumes that he can actually connect it to the router, of course. It sounds like all 4 ports on the router are used, in which case a hub might work just fine.

When i said "that`s what you get for 4 ports" - it`s just my way of thinking hehe. Router is DLink 704Pi... and current firmare allows only 4 DHCP addresses (4 ID`s). Original firmware...2.6 i think it was, didn`t even allow DHCP filtering Smile

Not the newest router...bout 3 years old Embarassed

I can tell you that I did my setup just a little different. I did put my Linksys Vonage router in front of my D-Link router. I only did this so I could play with the QoS settings. However, I think it will only affect the priority of packets leaving your router. I doubt it is true QoS tagging and I doubt that my ISP would give it priority over other data packets.

I put my D-link router behind the outside firewall (not in DMZ) and forwarded what ports I needed for internal services to my D-link router. Then I forwarded from the D-link router to the internal node. It seems to work fine. However, I don't care for the firewall ability on the Linksys RT31P2. It won't let me write specific rules to only allow specific source addresses. As it sits, you have to allow all Internet traffic to internal devices with port forwarding. This might cause me to put the D-link back in front and maybe hang the Linksys behind it. I know this setup works also, because my brother is running it this way.

Just a few options for you.

OK... Let's get this back OT and help Ivan out. We know you don't need QOS and generally we don't want to put anything in any DMZ if it can be avoided.

So let's get back to this "firmware allows only 4 DHCP addresses".

You confuse things further (or maybe help us) when you continue "...original firmware ... didn't even allow DHCP filtering".

Ivan... why or what are you trying to filter? DHCP simply assings IP addresses to network devices attached to the router. Do you mean port forwarding? Or, do you mean DHCP reservations, whereby you "assign" an IP address to a specific hardware MAC address? Help us out here.

80 bucks, no big deal. That way i can set everything up behind the router and be done with it. Smile

Oh, i pretty much know the concept of DHCP plyons, it`s the control panel of the new firmware does not allow more then 4 entries for DHCP addresses. You get 4 entry fields, that`s it. Unless... it might be storing those addresses on the back ground... I`ll check when i get home.
