I recently had time warner digital phone installed. They do the installation for free, which includes them connecting the phone adapter directly to a jack in my home so that all the phones in the house can use the service. The technician also went outside and did something to the outside jack. I assumed that he disconnected the outside wiring, but not 100% sure. My question is, I would now like to switch to vonage which would save me $15 a month. If I switch to vonage, did TW digital phone actually disconnect the outside box from the local POTS? Do you know if TW digital phone connects to the local POTS at all?
Thanx |

I switched from Time-Warner several months ago also. Loved their service but why pay so much more. You actually get more bells and whistles with Vonage. To answer your question the t/w tech disconnected bell-south at the box (located on my screened porch). I watched him do it. When I switched over to Vonage I just connected to an existing phone jack next to my computer and I have service throughout the house. T/W does an excellent job .... at least they did for me. If the cost was close I would keep them for their customer service. Vonage has been OK. I use my cell for lots of calls so my home phone is not as important as it once was. Anything beats Bell-South. |

Yes, TWC Digital Phone does cost more, but you are paying for superior value and service. Time Warner's service is engineered differently and rides over a dedicated network as opposed to riding on existing High Speed nodes. I have the service and I love it, quality of this level is worth the price. Good luck calling Vonage Customer service and getting assistance in a timely manner. |

As for most of us we do not have problems with Vonage and do not have a reason to call customer service. The few people that do have problems with their service is most likely due to their crappy internet connection of inability to setup a home network properly. I do not see why you waste your time reading the vonage forums anyway and responding with ignorant posts such as that. Go back to the timewaner forum on broadbandreports or something. |

Obviously the Time Warner poster has never had to deal with Time Warner in Tampa... ignorance is bliss to many of their people. As far as the "dedicated network", I'd love to see a few traceroutes. Even the pay-per-views on the digital cable systems is on the same frequencies as the cable internet stuff is on.
My biggest objection to TW/cable-based telephony & internet is the lack of backup in their systems. I've yet to see any cable system which has power backup on it. Sure, their servers at the headend are on UPS, but the distribution amps that run from their headend, down the streets and to your house are on plain 'ol city power. Maybe not bad if you're in Arizona where there's no severe weather, but not good if you get any good weather (blizzards, hurricanes, etc). |
