What does it say when you put your pointer over the blue ID icon? |

Someone, possible a telemarketer, that rigged their caller ID to show "11111111111".

We happen to have received a call from the same number on our POTS line two days ago. My wife actually answered that particular call, and it turned out to be a recorded message from a local non-profit group that is trying to gain support for a SPLOST (special local option sales tax) in Newton County, GA.
This particular non-profit is a very small group, and they definitely outsourced their phone spam.

Yeah, that's hard to do unless you have a front-end system at your end that can reject calls based on calling number or name. I have a full-blown PBX in my home and I examine the caller-id before the call is allowed to ring through to my phones. I make sure that the number has to be in the range of 201-xxx-xxxx to 998-xxx-xxxx and that blocks most of the spam calls. Heaven help anyone else that get's through because I'm brutal to telemarketers.
When I had Broadvox-Direct, they had a directory feature that allowed you to enter specific numbers and how to treat them when they come in. VoicePulse has a similar feature. I wish Vonage would add the same feature. |

I have also seen Caller ID also show all zeros.
If someone has the knowledge to mask the caller ID info, I usually figure that I do not need to answer the phone.

Wonder the call was someone using one of those "spoofing" programs or dial around numbers. That would allow for sending any telephone number as the one displayed? |

I'm also very brutal to telemarketers. The best thing is that when they do call (which isn't very often anymore since the DoNotCall list, it's usually after work...and since these people decided to invite themselves into my house without an invitation, I use them to unload all of my frustrations of the day. In some ways, I do miss not having them calling anymore, was somewhat nice to have 5 or 6 opportunities a night to scream my head off at someone.
What sort of PBX are you running? |
