PostPosted: Tue Mar 15, 2005 2:49 pm    Post subject: Speed test Reply with quote Back to top

Anyone running macs on their home network run into any issues running the Voip speed test on this website? The test runs fine, but it always shows a slow download speed. I have comcast 3 Mbit service and rarely show over 2 Mbit on this test for download. Upload is always in the 260 Kbps range. Fine. Anyway, spoke to comcast last night and they said everything is fine....and oh yeah, they know nothing about macs. THey always scare you buy telling you that they CAN send a tech out, but if it all turns out to be fine, they will ding you for $50.

My question is this: have the macheads out there found this test (and other java based tests) to accurately represent your download speed?

Thanks!

I don't think it is a MAC thing. I run multiple PCs running XP, both wired directly to my ATA and wireless. My speed is advertised to be 2mbit up and 384k down, many speed tests show between 1.5-2+ up, but the one on this forum only shows ~500k down. Someone in a different topic mentioned it was a bottleneck from the ISP to this site's ISP.

That makes sense. When I saw Bill's post, I ran the speed test on my mac powerbook and on my winxp laptop (tested 1 right after the other). Here are my results -- I have Comcast's 6600/768 plan:
Mac:
download speed: 5.59Mbps
upload speed: 648 kbps
QOS 70%

WinXP laptop:
download speed: 2.68 Mbps
upload speed: 651 kbps
QOS 25%

Since call quality on Vonage has been very good for me, I don't pay alot of attention to download speed unless my surfing seems sluggish. Then I'll usually use of the following to check my speed (not saying they're any more accurate, just they're what I'm used to using):
http://speedcheck2.optonline.net/speedcheck/speedcheck.html
http://nyc.speakeasy.net/

I will look at the settings. I can tell you that the connection on that server is 100 Mbps unlimited.

Could be your provider's network is near capacity. From the Vonage Forum speed test, I'm getting 6.7 Mbps down but only 702 kbps up:

Download 7,035,264 bps
Upload 719,112 bps
QOS 97%
RTT 72 ms
MaxPause 63 ms

At the same time from nyc.speakeasy.net, I'm getting about 12 Mbps each direction.

2005-03-15 22:05:20 EST: 12231 / 12106
Your download speed : 12524873 bps, or 12231 kbps.
A 1528.9 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 12396694 bps, or 12106 kbps.
