Does anyone know if the Linksys VoIP Phone adapter can be easily reprogrammed to use VoIP services provided by other providers? At which stage does the ownership of the Phone Adapter supplied by the Provider revert to the user? Is it better to buy the phone adapter via Retail where ownership is immediately vested in the Buyer versus having the Service Provider supply same? |

From what I have read on these forums, Vonage Locks their adapters and they can not be used on other VOIP services. If you buy retail, most likely it will be branded for Vonage, At&t etc.
Maybe someone will come along and correct me, but I think that is right.
PS: If Vonage supplies the adapter, they will charge you if not returned to them. You never own it. |

If you buy retail...no shipping charges, no activation fee, instant hook up and most retailers offer a $50 rebate so the device is FREE |

Oh I see. That is nice! Does the instant hookup and no activation fee apply to non-Vonage retail adapters as well? Thanks! |

Nevermind, it seems you can't actually buy generic adapters to be used with any VOIP service. |

Yes you can : ) You can buy SIP gateways... but they're only compatible with services that offer a SIP connection (i.e. Vonage Softphone). SIP gateways are useful for integrating a analog phone system with VoIP (i.e. hooking up a PBX to Vonage, Skype, etc). Other people uses these SIP gateways to place phone calls when they travel.
As for other boxes, I'm sure you can get "unlocked" ones too, but it's probably not worth the hassle at these prices. |
