Since the Vonage system does not send the tone, I vote
will not shut off until it times out.

to further clarify my question...

Since Vonage does not generate the tone. Does this mean they can't generate the tone for technical reasons or they won't generate the tone since they'd rather have their voice-mail system being utilized?

I believe it's called cutoff on disconnect. but regardless, if the voltage isn't dropped from the line (as it is on cod) then the answering machine has no way of knowing the call has disconnected. from what I've read, the mta (motorola) has this feature. the linksys devices apparently do not.

Yes, I have the Motorola ATA and it drops power on the line when there is a disconnect, or when there is a busy signal. The problem with the busy signal and the Motorola box is that one of my phones hangs up whenever the power completely drops from the line. So if I call a number that is busy, I don't hear the busy signal, my phone just quietly hangs itself up after I dial the number. It doesn't bother me because I only have one phone on my line like that.

I just performed a test now to see what happens with the Motorola box if I leave my receiver off hook once a disconnect takes place. The power cuts out for a second, but the power comes back with dead silence. The silence lasts for about 30 seconds, and then the notorious tone starts up when you leave the receiver off the hook for too long. It's loud and penetrating. I guess it is to draw your attention to hanging up the phone in case you forgot about it and left it off-hook. There is no busy signal or reorder tone on disconnects with the Motorola ATA.

I wish Linksys would make some improvements on their routers and/or firmware to handle answering machines properly. (and to get rid of the phaser background noise).

What do you mean by phaser background noise? Is this on your line when you are talking?

It's odd that this is happening. Vonage switched from handing out Motorola boxes to the LinkSys adapter. I was lucky to get the Motorola last year. Why don't they go back to Motorola if they are having this problem?

My friend was thinking of signing up with Vonage. He was quite impressed with my phone system. I think I'll ask him to hold off on signing up until this problem is resolved. Rolling Eyes
