Steven Cherry has written an article published in the March issue of IEEE Spectrum. It introduces Voip to technical user and addresses some of the most common misconceptions. Below is a list of the myths with a brief outline of the issues covered.
From the March IEEE Spectrum article, [ADMIN EDIT URL] "Seven Myths About Voice over IP"*
1) Voip is free. - broadband costs - hardware (headset to IP Phones) - toll charges to access POTS
2) The only difference between Voip and regular telephony is price. - Voip technology allows rapid implementation of new features - Reliability of last mile network
3) Quality of service isn't an issue nowadays, because there's plenty of bandwidth in the network. - discussion of latency, jitter and packet loss - overprovisioning and Mother's day
4) Voip can't replace telephony, because it still can't guarantee quality of service. - Multiprotocol Routing Service (MPLS)
5) Voip is just another data application. - Why your corporate IT department is not prepared to manage Voip
6) Voip isn't secure. - Virtual versus physical phone line tapping - Encryption
7) A phone is a phone is a phone. - Computers, PDAs and other devices as phones
*This article may only be available for IEEE members at this time. You might be able to find the Spectrum at your library or, if interested you can buy the article. I am trying to figure out how to arrange for access to this article, let me know if you are interested. |
