Greetings,

I've read myriad links regarding installation, but I want to make sure everything perfect before I activate service. Therefore, I have some questions I am hoping you guys can help me with.

I consider myself an advance user with computers, with one caveat--networking. I have never had a need to network computers, so this is my first time playing around with routers. I bought a Linksys WRT54G and just installed the software. It seems to be working fine (since I am typing this message) : Cool

Are there any programs that will test the router? I would like to make sure I am getting maximum throughput. My network will, for the time being, consist only of the router, a Motorola SB5100 modem, PAP2, and only one PC. I will add an adapter to move all this hardware into the bedroom where the phone plug and coax connection from Cox cable is located, but untill then, I just have everything on my computer desk. My internet connection seems snappy (DSLreports is down atm, or I would test the speed there).

Also, how do I tell what firmware is installed? Could I check the properties in the driver? I would like to know whether or not I should flash it with the newest stuff available...seems to fix many problems having the QoS working with the newest software. The flash is pretty straight forward?

Once I confirm I am getting maximum data through the router, I would next plug in the PAP2...anything I need to watch out for? I read that I should assign it a static IP and set it to priority QoS, or something like that (I am still trying to learn the jargon)...and I need to do some port forwarding nonsense : ) Is this pretty easy for a rookie to figure out?

Once I get the PAP2 configured, is there a way to test it before I activate service? Again, I would like to make sure all is well before I setup the service...

...and I shouldn't have to pay the activation fee, as I bought the hardware at BB, right? I took advantage of the $59 up-front, $59 MIR deal...and would I qualify for the free month, as well?

Any help/advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

figured out how to get into the setup utility to check the firmware...



To access the Web-based Utility, launch Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator, and enter the Router’s default IP address... Then press Enter.


A password request page, shown in Figure 6-1 will appear. (Non-Windows XP users will see a similar screen.) Leave the User Name field blank. The first time you open the Web-based Utility, use the default password admin.
(You can set a new password from the Administration tab’s Management screen.) Then click the OK button.

Pick up Sveasofts latest production firmware for your router and load it up.

You can find at sveasoft.com. Here is a screenshot of my config. Only difference is that I have an RT31P2 instead of the PAP2.

Fill in the appropriate Values that you get from your ISP. Remember after you flash your WRT to set it at factory defaults and reboot it. Any bandwith config changes also require a reboot before they take effect.

Everything you see as premium is my Vonage adapter.

Assign a static IP to the PAP2 if possible outside of the DHCP scope on your WRT.

Thanks...I checked the utility and it says firmware v. 3.03.1....and I do have the QoS settings like in your screenshot...should be g-2-g (good to go) and could skip the flash, right? Cool

Should I test the router with some software before hooking the PAP2 up? After giving it some thought, the only loss throughput I would have would be a bad cable, as no wireless is being used...just using the switch...or the settings could be wack, I guess...is there a guide for optimum settings in all the menus of that utility?

You can use the factory firmware if you want to. The Sveasoft code is much more robust. Its up to you really.

Try it with what you have and see how it goes.

I did a ping in the utility software; here are my results:

Does that imply everything is working okay? They seem like good pings, so I should move to step 2 and plug in the PAP2 BEFORE I change settings in the router utility program? I guess I am most confused with all the settings of assigning IPs and DHCP, port forwarding, et al....any optimum tweak setting manuals in the forums for a WRT54G?
