I just got Vonage and i love it. After reading the problemd with Series 2 Direct Tivo i was worried about my Philips DSR7000. Since i ordered Vonage i have been preparing to use the seria port and an external modem.

After I recieved Vonage yesterday I tried my DSR7000 on Vonage and had it make a dialy call and it worked. I tried the daily call four more times and it worked each time. The DSR7000 has a V.34 (28.Cool Modem in it according to the user manual where the Hughes HDRV2 has a 33.6 modem according to hughes.com. I also have the bandwidth on the highest setting which I think is the key.

According to what I've read in the TivoCommunity forums and else where, the DSR7000 and HDVR2 are the same machine. Here's a link from an authorized reseller that confirms this.

I have the DSR7000 as well but had to use the external modem solution. It's working fine for test calls and normal daily updates, but now I'm stuck trying to get the 3.1.1b software update. I can only maintain a connection for about 10 to 20mins. This is a problem since the software updates can take up to 4 hours using the 19200 baud rate.

Since software updates work for some and not others I thought this might have to do with different ATA model numbers. This apparently is not the case since Vonage appears to be using the same model number for all accounts. From what I read the other possibility is the broadband connection and local gateway. These would be based on your ISP and locality.

I'm in Charlotte NC and my ISP is Timewarner. MJH is in the same area and he was able to get the software update. Based on this I'm guessing he has a diffirent ISP .

Brucefire and MJH, what ISP and city are you in?

I agree that they are the same machine. At Best Buy they had them side by side and everything is identical except the color on the buttons . All specifications appeared to be the same except the modem specs. The DSR7000 manuel and the Philips web site states that the modem is a v.34 (28.Cool and on the Hughes it states that the HDVR2 has a 33.6 modem but does not give a standard. I still think that they are both the same. I am figuring that the Hughes web site is in error.

The point that i was trying to make is that several people have stated that both units have a 56K modem which according to the specifications is wrong.

I now have the DSR7000 on the fax line and have not had a problem with it calling in.

I'm in Columbus OH and have WideOpenWest for my ISP at their ultra tier (4000/500). I sucessfully downloaded the 3.1.1b through th fax line. The download took a few times to download and ended up taking 193 minutes. The lucky thing is that I generaly only recieve facsimiles. I am not sure how many large updates Tivo post. Any ideas? I might have to move it back to the primary Vonage line.

Thanks for the reply guys.

Since MJH is on Earthlink, this is actually using the Timewarner infrastructure. I'm not sure why his is working better than mine.

Oh well. I took it to a neighbors to download the 3.1.1b software update.

So I'm good tell the next upgrade.. Wink

I am also a user of the Philips DSR7000/17 DirecTV/TiVo combo unit.

I just recently installed the Motorola VT1000 to my home network from Vonage. It is connected to my Linksys router directly. As far as phone service is concerned it works just fine but the calls from the combo unit fails every time.

I have been reading diligently on several forums in an effort to learn and understand the capabilities of both the DirecTV/Combo unit & Vonage service. I have found several posts that declare no problems with using Vonage and several that say it cannot be done. I believe that it can!

To those who say it can be done can you provide a detailed outline?

> I have tried dialing prefixes ,#019 & ,#034 but to no avail.
> Vonage bandwidth is at maximum.
> All of Vonage's suggested ports are forwarded to correct IP in router.

Any, all suggestions will be greeted with open arms! Lol

I also have the Philips DSR7000 DirecTV/TiVo combo unit. I would like to switch to Vonage, but have not done it yet because of the uncertainty over whether Vonage will work with the Philips DSR7000. The cable modem provider in my area (Illinois) is Comcast.

If anyone can confirm that this should work for me and explain what I need to do to make it work, I'd be extremely grateful!!!! Lol

Thanks in advance!
Tim
