Hello,
I live in a large house with roommates, and we have just purchased 2 Vonage lines with two separate routers (the 2 separate routers are for if/when someone moves -- we don't want two lines on one router).
I'm a little confused as to what I do when the two sets arrive. We have a wireless home network powered by a cable modem and an Airport Extreme. From my understanding, a normal setup would be something like this:
Cable-->Modem-->Vonage router-->Airport Extreme
With reconfiguring the 10.*.*.* setup on the Airport to a 192* one, things should work, right? But where would the second router go?
Also, a quick question about phones -- we are keeping our normal cordless phone to use for one of the lines, but I want to purchase a new phone for the second line. If I want to use the new phone far away from where the router is installed (on the 2nd floor instead of on the 1st where the setup is), I'd need to get another cordless and leave the base downstairs, right? And bring the phone downstairs to charge it? I know this might sound like a dumb question -- I'm just not sure if there are any crazy wireless phone options that I may have.
Thanks in advance for your help, Emily |

I am using a PAP2 unit off my Airport Extreme. My setup goes like this: Cable-Modem-Airport Extreme-Switch-PAP2
I did not use a router as I didn't want the problems with firewalls and self-assigning IP addresses. Think of a switch as a mini-router.
I have the Airport setup to assign IP addresses. When adding the Vonage service I didn't change a single setting on the Airport. I simply plugged the switch into the LAN port on the Airport, and plugged the PAP2 into the switch. (I need a switch as there's another computer in the room that doesn't have a wireless card).
When I retreive the IP address of the PAP2 using the *1111 function, it gives me a proper Airport assigned IP number.
I think you could plug a second Linksys "box" into the same router. They don't care where they're plugged in, as long as they have access to the internet.
As for phones, you either have to live with it being close to the computer, get a cordless, or get a very long extension cord. I only need the one line so I purchased a Uniden multiple handset phone and placed them around the house.
Let me know if you have any more questions. There don't seem to be many AEBS users out there. |
