PostPosted: Sat Mar 12, 2005 6:27 pm    Post subject: Computers on a net Reply with quote Back to top

Hello guys:

I am trying to decide if the service is for me... maybe somebody can help me with that:

1- We have a net of 4 computers. If we install Vonage adapter before our router, and install the apropriate software in our computers, can we answer calls from ANY computer? In this situation, will this work as a phone? That is, if somebody is talking and you "get the phone," will you hear their conversation?

2 - If the above is NOT true, can we have more than one adapter with the same number? That is, one adapter per computer so that any computer can answer the same telephone number?

3- Based on the same line of thought as 2 above: can I have an adapter in one city, and othe in other city using the same telephone number, so that any person in any of the cities can answer the same call?

4- If I have more than one number using the same adapter: can I route the call according to the the number called? Again -- imagine we are answering the calls using our computers, and not phones.

5- We have a router for our Intranet -- we are going to answer calls using our computers -- Do we still need Vonage adapter, or is there a way to use our own router to receive Vonage service?

Thank you for your help,

Nelson

You can plug in up to ten phones on one adapter, five phones per line. Each adapter can handle two different phone lines. So you would need to run install a phone line splitter out of the line jack on the phone adapter and install up to 5 phones that way. When the phone line rings, anyone can answer it, and all telephones can take part in the conversation. (Just like having multiple phones in a house with one line - When Granny calls from retire-haven all family members can pick up a phone and talk together.

No, only one adapter can be provisioned per phone number at a given time. You can have multiple phone adapters installed, so if you wanted four lines, two adapters would work just fine. The only thing limiting you on this factor, is the amount of bandwidth you have avalable on your ISP connection. Each phone line takes 90k (up and downstream). Run this Voip speed test to determin how many lines you can support, also keep in mind that you will not want to max your connection out if you need the internet connection for any data use: http://www.vonage-forum.com/voip-speed-test.html

Same as above. No.

In the way you are thinking, No. You can add a "Softphone", which is an additional serivce, to your account, and that "virtual" phone would only work on the one computer the software is installed to. The softphone would have a seperate phone number and the minutes used is billed seperatly. You can read about Softphones at this link: http://www.vonage.com/features.php?feature=softphone

You need a Vonage compatable router. There are quite a few different models out there, but your exhisting equipment is not going to work. Good luck. Please post any follow questions you may have.

Hello Matt:

Thank you for your input, but it seems I was not clear in my first question.

Suppose we have 4 computers running softphone. (We are trying to avoid phone sets). Can those computers answer the same line (same tel number)?

Of course, the idea is not to everybody answer at the same time, but the avilable person to answer it. Using its computer/softphone.

Thanks,

Nelson

Only one computer can be logged into a Smartphone "line" at a time, only one person will be able to hear it ring and answer it.

I am not 100% sure on this: I think that only one Softphone is allowed per account.

Softphones are not offered as a standalone service.

Matt:

One question more:
You get your account and your additional softphone account.
Let me understand, you do NOT need an adapter for the softphone account, right? That is, you install it in your computer and you can go anywhere without your adapter, right?

I'm thinking -- with the Conference Call function and a softphone, I'm pretty close to reach what I need.

Thank you for your help,

Nelson

Thats correct, it is portable - you do not need to bring a phone adapter with you for the softphone to work. But to get a softphone, you do need to subscribe to the "full" service and then as an add-on, add the softphone to your account. This is done by the user, from their web-account (Dashboard).

You pay extra for the SoftPhone software and service on top of the regular Vonage fee. I think it includes 100 minutes or 500 minutes and then after that you pay per minute connection fees as well. And I believe you'd need four Vonage accounts with four phone numbers plus four SoftPhones per month to use all four computers that way.

Yep... but at least now I know which way to go. Of course I may get 2 accounts + 2 softphoes, or another combination. Now I have to stop to think...

And you have other people offering the service -- I may have to got that way.

Nevertheless, understanding the limitations of the feature was a great step.

Thanks,

Nelson
