Post subject: DirectTivo and Vonage Success Stories ONLY
I have gone through about all of the different topics on this. I have been to TivoCommunity, and I am wondering if this topic could start with people adding in success stories only. I havent gotten a fix yet.
I have an Series 2 RCA DVR80, so I know my USB's wont work.
Thanks
Spepi

Post subject: Success here!
I've had
Vonage
for close to two years now and have never experienced any problems dialing out with my Tivo. I'm using Optimum Online with a Cisco ATA 186. I have even performed the software upgrades with
Vonage
. The only thing that bothers me is that I have to run a wire from my ATA to all my Tivo's every time I want to dial out. That's minor though.

I tried all the codes, had
Vonage
change my packetization, used DSL filters and everything else and had no luck with my R10 and my RCA DVR40. I finally just bought two of the serial cables from 9th tee and connect through my laptop with PPP. Works like a charm and only takes a couple minutes to do.

Post subject: IT FINALLY WORKED! Vonage and Directv Tivo
I had been using the ,#019 prefix and it seemed to work fine, however about a month ago it quit...after much searching and trial & error I came up with this solution...let me know if it works for you!
Here it is...this has worked for me:
set your Dial Prefix to: 2122773895
Then your Call waiting Prefix to: ,#034
Then set your area code to 212 and download new call in numbers
when that goes through select the 212-277-3895 number
set it up to dial with or without the "1" and give it a try --

Here is what works for me: Packetization @ 10, DSL Filter, Prefix *99,*70, Area Code 212 and the New York Phone number. Works about 90% of the time. Note: It looks like Chefboz used the New York Number in his Dialing Prefix, good idea if you can't dial out to get it.

I just broke down and went with serial PPP.
I built my own serial cable and have it hooked up to a bluetooth-to-RS232 dongle. Over on my mac desktop, I have a "serial in" virtual port that has a PPP server sitting on it. Works pretty well.

DTV doesn't have the USB ports enabled on their boxes so connecting via that method is not going to work. As I said in prior posts, just get the serial cable, follow the instructions posted on here or the tivocommunity forum and thats all you need to do. You don't HAVE to have your Tivo call out at all. It's only used for PPV services and you can order that on the web. You will just get a nag screen when you don't call in after a couple weeks and will have to clear it one time a day. Remember, this is VOICE over IP.... I save quite a bit of money each month by moving to
Vonage
and would never go back to Verizon. The cable is about $10 and it will take you 2 minutes to do the updates once a month or however often you decide.
Vonage
is reliable (at least for me) and it would make things easier if DTV would enable the USB ports...but until then you have to play with the codes or go the simple route and use the serial cable and PPP connection.

Has anyone tried hooking the TiVo to a
Vonage
fax line? Seems like that would work since it's a modulated data signal just like a fax machine. My units are all using USB, but if it works, a $9.95 fax line might be worth it considering some of the pain that I sense here.
