Well, I seem to have gotten the below to work on my R10. It made a test call and then I had it connect to the DVR service and all worked. It downloaded an update and installed it.

No such luck on my DVR40 (RCA). It failed everytime...

Quote:
Dial-In Number: 1-212-277-3895
Dial Prefix: ,#034
Call Waiting Prefix: *70,*99
Tone/Pulse: Tone
Phone Avail Detection: Off
Dial Tone Detection: On

I only changed the dial in number to 212 to see if it made a difference on the DirecTV calls. It didn't. I can dial locally for TiVo calls if I choose.

OK...sort of a follow up to my last post. I have since disconnected my DVR40 from the phone line since it's not connecting anyway. However, I orced a call on my R10 last night at around 4pm and it downloaded an update and everything was good. Looking at my phone logs I see the following going on so I am wondering why all the calls to DTV/Tivo. FYI the 410-919-0310 is the local number for DirecTV (or Tivo I guess).

That call behavior is odd. Are you certain the 410 number isn't still in the dial prefix?

What does your status screen say about your last successful and next scheduled TiVo call?

By the way, downloads are done via satellite and the phone calls only activate them.

Got it working!!!

I have the series two Hughes DVR with Vonage and got it to call out this morning.

Instead of repeating myself on this forum as well as the other forums, I did a write up on my blog and will link to it.

You can find my solution, no charge for access, no passwords, accounts or other requirements at http://www.rons-sandbox.com

Congratulations on getting it working, a few comments on your write up.

Vonage does not charge for long distance

While Vonage does not charge for long distance, it is my contention that DirecTV calls in addition to TiVo calls will be made using the number in the dial prefix if you set a number in your dial prefix. DirecTV calls are normally toll free.

That is, DirecTV will switch from being toll free calls to billed calls for Vonage users on 500 minute plans. While this may not seem like a big deal, some DirecTiVo series 1 users have been experiencing hundreds of minutes of DirecTV calls per month.

If you can get the toll free call that downloads local numbers to go through, even if you do it using someone elses phone line, and select the 212 area code number as your dial in number your set up would be more correct and would use the toll free number to contact DirecTV.

Port Forwarding

You should not need to enable port forwarding in the normal case. This is typically reserved in cases where you are using a firewall. You may want to try your setup without these ports forwarded as you may want to use them on another machine in the future (I do).

Other

I find it interesting that you chose to use a wireless bridge for your Vonage adapter so as to locate it closer to your DVR. You might want to put more information about that decision versus the decision to use a wireless phone jack or house wiring. Both options may be less expensive for other users who read your blog.

Slow down codes do work on Series 1 units.

I suggest that the switch to a 4 conductor line cord from a two might simply be a quality issue. Most 2 conductor cords are very cheaply made and can be a source of interference or loss of quality.

You should specify the direction you installed the DSL filter.

I realize the Series 1 comments are not directly relevant to your blog, but someone dealing with a series 1 may not understand that when they use your blog to attempt to configure their unit.

Some very good points. I'll update the blog to reflect why I made some of these decisions as well as some disclaimers for the series one tivo's and the 500 minute users.

I'd also like to note that I tried downloading the numbers for the 212 area code previous to getting things to work with no luck. At your request, I went ahead and removed the dial prefix number and selected the option to change the phone number. It showed me the 212 area code as well as a list of phone numbers for that area. I selected the phone number I used in the dial prefix and made a test call that failed.

Restored my previous settings and made a test call that failed so I'll keep playing with this to see what's up. Once I have it working again, I'll remove port forwarding and see if it does anything

I have a Hughes GXCEBOT and tried several modem speeds (,#014 to ,#034) AND the NY 212 phone number trick (the Vonage support guy promised the 212 trick would work). No luck with any combination of the above.

In the end I got it working by just entering ",,*99" as the dialing prefix. I had originally set it to “,,,*99” as suggested early in this thread, but found the 3rd pause was too long and I got a rapid busy signal.

So just to recap:

TiVo Unit: Hughes GXCEBOT
Dial Prefix: ",,*99"
Area Code: normal for my area (919)
Phone Number: default number for Raleigh, NC (325-0429)
Other Config Items: None required (modem speed, location, etc.)

I'll post since I have scoured these boards for help and something finally worked.

Set Vonage to maximum voice quality
ignore the dail in number
Dial Prefix: 12122773895
Call waiting Prefix: ,,#019,,
phone available: off
Dial tone detect: off

I skipped the look for local numbers (the old unit still is set up for our old house in a different state)

I have Hughes Tivo and this also worked for me -- thank God.

It worked for me! Just wonder now if it will update Detroit locals by dialing NYC!

ignore the dial in number
Dial Prefix: 12122773895
Call waiting Prefix: ,,#019,,
phone available: off
Dial tone detect: off
And I do have a DSL filter connected to the TIVO box.

After puling my hair out all day! Finally! Thanks so much! Very Happy

And I do have a DSL filter connected to the TIVO box. (either)

For the Directivo R10

Dial-In Number: 12122773895(although I didnt need this chainged)
Dial Prefix: ,#034
Call Waiting Prefix: *70,*99

Tested 10 out of 10 times on two R10's and one 10-250.

Very Happy
