Ok, here is my problem in a nutshell. I just signed up with Vonage, and I am transferring my old phone number to Vonage.... This takes a couple of weeks, so in the mean time, they told me that when someone calls my number, the OLD (SBC) phone lines will work... and my phone will ring.

Any OUTGOING call will be through the Vonage network...

Once the number transition occurs, then INCOMING calls will also go over Vonage.

HOWEVER!! Here is my problem. If I keep the existing wiring from SBC hooked up outside of my house, my phone only rings once then dies!!! IF I disconnect SBC from outside, everything works, except now if you call my phone number.... it doesn't go through because the number transition did not occur yet. You can only call me with my virtual number.

SO.... In a nutshell, I guess it is NOT possible to hook up Vonage in conjunction with SBC????????????

Which phone dies? Your SBC line dies after one ring? That doesn't make any sense if you haven't changed anything with your existing line.

I hope you know you can't plug your Vonage adapter into your house wiring unless you've completely cut the connection with the SBC incoming line. If you've got them both hooked up simultaneously, you're going to run into problems and most likely you'll fry your Vonage adapter.

To do what you want to do, first forward your SBC line to your Vonage virtual number. Then disconnect the SBC line and plug your Vonage adapter into your house wiring. If you do that, you can use Vonage exclusively until your LNP goes through (which will probably take months, by the way).

I know how to forward my number from Vonage's website... but the problem here is I need to forward an SBC number!!

Reason being is that the SBC number has not transferred to Vonage yet...

Does that make sense?

yes it makes sense and it also makes sense that thousands of people do the same thing, this isn't the first time it's ever been discussed in the world of Voip (same for the caller id on computer).
call forwarding isn't some new fancy service, it's been available on pots (sbc in your case) for a long time. if you don't have it, you can't use it. you can request it from sbc and pay them for it, but then you're wasting money and ordering a new feature may stall or cancel your lnp.

I'm not sure why this is such a problem. why can't you plug a phone into the Vonage adapter (even on an as-needed basis), and keep all the other phones the same (on sbc) until the number ports?

You are correct... that is what I need to do. However, I didn't want to give SBC the satisfaction of controlling my lines anymore!! lol

I can't stand the company..... but thats a personal beef Smile

Your suggestion is what I'll end up having to do... guess I'm just a stubborn SOB... lol Mr. Green
