I Had the Linksys RT31P2 originally which had the issue with background noise on the line. THe only temporary fix for that was to short out the 'second' jack in the back of the unit... by either plugging in a phone and leaving it off the hook... or plugging in a phone cable and twisting the inner wires to short it out. That DID solve the background noise by about 90%.
However, Vonage kept telling me for awhile that Linksys was manufacturing NEW units with a new board inside that will solve that problem. Yesterday I received one of them... well... at least that's what Vonage said. They claim it is a NEW version that supposed to fix that problem. The unit itself, however, looks identical to previous adapter and has same model number. I wish there was a sticker showing manufacturing date or something.
Nevertheless, I've got the NEW one working, and it does seem better. For one thing... plugging in a second 'off hook' phone in the second jack... does NOTHING to change the sound quality... so I guess they fixed that. The sound does seem ok... although I still feel like i hear a little 'white noise' when i have my phone at full volume... but maybe that's the uniden 5.8 mhz signal issue. I will try a regular phone later.
In all... if you have the issue described above, I think you can now request the NEW and improved units.
Has anyone else gotten one? Can anyone else validate or confirm these are in fact the improved versions?
Thanks. |

Ive had them make so many custom mods to mine and with the shorted rj-11 its working great. I think I may keep what I have until they design a brand new unit.
I had alot of problems playing FPS games with mine to. Now that it is behind my WRT54G things are all great. |

I'm just curious if anyone else has received this 'new' unit? |

Well tell us what version of the firmware shipped on your unit? |

I got a replacement at the beginning of Feb. and the new one worked. the only difference I found was the serial number on the new one was CH500E****** where the old one was CH500D******.
Does your serial number have a 'D' or 'E' in it? |

I got my replacement Friday, and it's working great (well, almost).
No noise when I'm dialing or in a call - phone works fine. I'm still having the disconnect issues though.
I transfer a lot of files / data back and forth to work, and do a lot of remote-control after hours. It seems during consistent load, the connection drops and I have to reconnect after a couple minutes.
I'm considering putting a Linksys router (WRT54GS) in front of the phone adapter to see if that helps. That way I'd at least get a true QoS (assuming FW upgrade) and have some more advanced features for monitoring, etc. |

I traded in my Cisco ATA-186's terminal adapters with the help of a Vonage CS rep and got two new RT31P2's myself. These came about the last week of February. Mine have serial numbers in the CH500E range as well. They work perfectly and I can actually fax now. No issues at all.
I have noticed that I get much less of the random touch-tone beeping during speech now than I did when I had that ATA-186 units.
Overall, I'm really pleased with the quality. |

I received a new RTP312 unit at the end of February and it is an 'E' series, but it DOES have the noise, so they say they are going to ship me a new one, something about putting my name on a spreadsheet. This was on Thursday 10 March, the Rep said the new units weren't shipping yet, which I find hard to believe, he was a Level 3 rep though. It all started with me complaining about losing the ability to use Tivo through it after they changed out my Motorola which worked great, except for that darned Caller-ID issue with it. He said that he expects they will have the "fix" shipping in a few weeks. I'm curious if anyone has the "facts" on this pain in the neck issue... |

My new unit has an E in the serial number where the old one had a D. I guess that's a good sign it's 'newer'. |
