This is an old thread, but still working.

Make sure you don't have softphone already running on another machine. (will only run from a single IP at a time.) Your main account is tied to the hardware and cannot be used through a softphone.

I assume you are signed up for the softphone and you have found the softphone password on your softphone config page.

I have found the XTen software difficult to use. Try the SJLabs free product.

On the topic of headsets for the various SoftPhone configurations discussed, has anyone been able to use a WiFi enabled laptop/PocketPC/etc. that is also Bluetooth capable along with a bluetooth headset?

I realized the possibility awhile back and it seemed really cool. I could swap my bluetooth headset between the cell phone or Softphone PC. It would help when I travel to other cities and such. Especially if the talk quality is better than the cell phone.

Successfully pulling this off should also confirm my status as a true geek Smile .

Don't worry, most of us here are! Very Happy

Your a true geek when you start buying stuff just to network it together! I.E. Hmm, I need another router, just for fun, so I can run RIP and OSPF together and see what happens!

Skype has a fully functioning application for Pocket PC WM5. Until Vonage gets one it's a very appealing solution. I set it up on my IPAQ with no problems at all.

I spent hours and hours trying to get X-ten and SJlabs to work without success. I had skype up in minutes.

I spent several hours/sleepless nights trying to figure this out, sharing to save others the hassle. The softphone config will work with a Cisco IP 7940/7960 phone under a couple of conditions:

1) You have to be using the firmware revision P0S3-07-4-00. P0S3-08-2-00 WILL NOT work (doesn't work with Broadvoice either).

2) Use the following settings in your config file served up via the TFTP server:

line1_name: "15551231234" ;
line1_authname: "15551231234" ;
line1_password: "<SOFTPHONE PASSWORD GOES HERE>";
line1_shortname: "5551231234" ;
proxy1_address: sphone.vopr.vonage.net ;
proxy1_port: 5061 ;

Replace 15551231234 with your Vonage softphone number (you must include the 1 at the beginning, as your full phone number is your username). For the shortname, I omit the 1 at the beginning for display purposes on the phone. No outbound proxy is necessary (the phone will use/discover the sip proxy, as long as it has the initial proxy address).

You have to go to X10 to get the requirements on the software but I can tell you this it is worth getting a B/G wireless device just so that you can have enough bandwith for some public "Crappy" B hot spots.

PostPosted: Sat Sep 23, 2006 3:19 pm    Post subject: Softphone Software for Pocket PC Reply with quote Back to top

Hi Folks,

I feel for all of you who are frustrated by the lack of useable software out there that supposedly enables your Pocket PC to work as a softphone via WiFi. Problem is, the third party software providers, i.e. X-Ten, SJLabs, WiFive, etc., are small companies not held to any standards of accountability and therefore don't have to (and don't) provide any sort of support for their products. I have a softphone line through Vonage, and depending on what day of the week it is, one program will work and the others won't and so on. In fact, it was only several months ago that SJLabs came out with a preconfigured program for the Pocket PC (WM2003SE and WM5) which worked fine on my PDA2k. Today however, it doesn't work anymore (corporate politics between Vonage and SJLabs I'm sure). So I deleted the program and went back to the original X-Ten Lite 2.2 software that came out about four years ago. Interestingly enough, the X-Ten Lite stopped working on my PDAs over two years ago; but guess what? It works now albeit not very well. I ended up deleting that program too since it's not even supported anymore by X-Ten. X-Ten isn't even in business anymore. Now it's CounterPoint or some such nonsense. While CounterPoint promised a new PPC program would be available back in July, it still has not surfaced.

Bottom line: please folks, I beseech you, don't waste your time fooling around with iffy third party programs which are long on promise and real short on delivery. Because of the lack of industry standards; the fact there's an absence of accountability, and the fact one wastes hours and hours and hours trying to get these stupid programs to work even marginally, it's simply not worth your time to try and use your PPC with Vonage (who themselves have no interest in supporting PPCs -- they don't even know what one is). The whole VOIP thing is kind of unreliable to begin with, so to try and pipe it through a PPC is going to do nothing more than cause you a bunch of headaches. Even if you're able to get it working, it'll only work for a short time (like everything else in the computer world).

I speak from mounds of experience with these things, and my sagest advice would be, save your time, money and effort; go with something like Skype, BaraBlu or the many other PPC VOIP WiFi/GSM/GPRS programs and forget about trying to use your PPC with Vonage; at least for the foreseeable future.

Kindest Regards,
bfaile2323

Does anyone have a copy of the free pocketpc app from xten? If you could post a link to it that would be great. sjlabs software is good but doesnt allow for custom dns per entry.
Thanks
