I have had my Vonage service for a couple of years and for the most part have really enjoyed it. However, we recently moved to the sticks(mountains) and my only highspeed option unfortunately is wireless. The service itself isn't that bad and for the most part my ping return times are in the 60ms range. However, the quality of the calls over the wireless just suck! Is there anything at all I can do to improve this? I really don't want to go back to a land line. Would getting a better router that does qos help? Thanks in advance! |

By the way I ran the test @ testyourvoip.com multiple times averaging between 3.8 and 4.4. |

So right now I have the original piece of crap Netgear RP114 coming in and then the Cisco ATA 186 after that. I do have a Linksys WRT54G. Would I be better off uploading one of these 3rd party firmwares on it and modifying bandwidth settings on it? Thanks! |

That very same "piece of crap" setup worked just fine for me for 2 1/2 years. | rfoote wrote: | | Would I be better off uploading one of these 3rd party firmwares on it and modifying bandwidth settings on it? Thanks! | I would not, until you see how it goes as is. |

Wireless - line of sight. Wouldn't dare try on satellite. |

I currently use Vonage over LOS wireless... it works fairly well.. HOWEVER.. there are a few things that really make it work or not... with wireless there are retransmissions neccessary sometimes... this will cause a blip...
What brand is the equipment you are using? Is it alvarion? Cisco? Do you happen to know if it's frequency hopping or direct sequence?
Several things (of which the ISP will have to do) will make all the difference in the world.
A) FRAME RATE ON THE AU - If the sector that you are on is over subscribed you will have problems when the framerate (packets/sec) gets too high.. a Vonage call needs about 50 frames/sec
B) Error Rate - The AU needs to be very clear of errors both to you and others, as any time the AU takes resending data will delay voice packets getting to you.
C) Traffic Shaper - The ISP really REALLY needs a traffic shaper on their end to throttle what kind of junk (P2P) traffic is going down the tube, and to give priority to Voip traffic. |

Did you try enabling the bandwidth saver option for Vonage. This requires less kb for each call and could help.
