PostPosted: Fri Mar 11, 2005 3:21 pm    Post subject: How I have resolved my problem with Brinks Reply with quote Back to top

As many of you, my Brinks alarm system stopped communicating properly with its server after I switched to Vonage (actually 6 months after, beats me). I was able to send a test signal and back, and the system was properly monitoring my property, but it was unable to upload/download information. Although my system worked fine, an error signal (+ beep) was generated every night a 5am!
After going back and forth between Brinks and Vonage, I finally talked to someone at Brinks who knew about the problem, and even better, knew how to fix it, or at least, work around it.
Brinks simply disconnected the upload/download capability of my system. The drawback is that I don't have a clock on my digital pads (no incidence on incidents clock), and, maybe more important for some, Brinks cannot remotely change my setup. This means that if I forget my code, Brinks won't be able to reset the system for me at 3am. I'll need a technician for that.
But other than that, my system works as it should.
For reference, I have a Brinks 3000D system.
' hope this helps. Wink

Please explain how Brinks disconnected download/upload capability? Also, does it still dial out as it should for emergencies, testing?

Did they simply disconnect a wire or two?

Yes my system is still "fully" functionnal in that it dials out in case of an emergency and tests can be run without any problem. The error I was experiencing was just when my system was trying to download from Brinks server information such as time update or master password change (CH error code). My LCD pads don't display the time anymore (and that would be an issue only if you have LCD pads) and if I totally lose my mind and cannot remember my passcode, Brinks won't be able to reset it for me remotely. A technician will have to be dispatched for that.
As to what has exactely been done, I could not answer precisely. The statement of work lists an upgrade from system 3000A to 3000D with deconnection of the upload/download capability.
But yes, my property is fully monitored by Brinks through a Vonage telephone line (I am actually using a dedicated fax line, but this is irrelevant here).
I hope this helps.

Which Brinks location (city/town) did your Technician come from? There many franchises out there and I want to put my technician in touch with yours.

I am in Atlanta Georgia. Brinks did not charge me anything since I have a premium plan with them.

No offense, but monitoring with one of the "name brand" alarm comanies is about the most expensive way to go about it.

Most alarm systems are made by a company called ADEMCO. I have two (one for home, and one for the office) that were installed by Rollins Security (now part of Ameritech).

I purchased the equipment, which cost a few bucks, but after 10 years, the stuff still works great. Many newer upscale homes and townhouses have ADEMCO stuff built right in. It is solid equipment!

I swiched from Rollins when they were bought by Ameritech quite a few years back and they jacked up the monthly monitoring fee.

After making a few calls, I found a local company (the dorkily named "Police Patrol Security") that agreed to do monitoring for $52 - per QUARTER (that's about $17 per month). This was about 1/3 of what the big boys were charging. I've been with them for almost 10 years now. Good folks.

If you buy your equipment from a "name" alarm company, they may use a proprietary version of the motherboard (but probably still ADEMCO equipment) that may be difficult or impossible to reprogram. All the more reason NOT to go with the big boys. If you are leasing the equipment (and paying over $100 a month for the service) shame on you. That's money down the toilet. The alarm system itself is not that expensive.

(NOTE: Many of these "leased" systems are often left in place after the customer disconnects. I had an investment property with a Brinks system left in it by the previous owner. They never came back for it!).

Even with proprietary motherboards and alarm systems, 3rd party providers can monitor your system. They do have small boxes with RJ-11 connectors than intercept the alarm calls and re-rout them to a new call center - all for a lot less than what you are paying per month.

MOST IMPORTANT: If you have an alarm system, make sure that you have smoke detectors as part of the system. This is the most valuable feature of any alarm. You are far more likely to have a fire problem than a break-in problem, and a fire problem will be far more costly. An early response from the fire department can save your house or your life! You'd be suprised how many alarm systems are sold without fire protection. Many "basic" systems sold (leased) by Brinks et al. give you a couple of door switches and a motion sensor, and that's it.

The alarm business has a pretty shady past. A lot of the people in the business are or were former criminals. One technique to sell alarms has been to break into someone's house and then come back the next day to sell an alarm. Also, alarm salesmen going door to door have been known to "case" a house, tell a friendly thief about the place, and then go back after the buglary to clinch the sale. Be forewarned about "free security evaluations" from alarm companies! It ain't coincidence if your house gets broken into at about the same time.....

Shop around, and Good Luck!
