In doing a search for some other threads, I know that we can check our voice mail while away from home using a "local" access number. At the time the other post were made, though, it seems that there was no way to know if the local access number was truly a local call. Vonage posts an area code list with an access number for each area, but there is no way to know if that number is truly local. For example, I'm in the 717 area code, but some calls to other parts of the area code are in fact long distance.

Has anyone discovered a way to find out if an access number is truly a local call based on where you happen to be when you make the call? I wouldn't want to be checking my voicemail from someone else's home, and unknowingly be racking up long distance charges on their phone bill for them.

There is no way for Vonage to know. Local or long-distance cannot be determined solely by the phone number used to call.

Every phone company I know of has a number you can call to find out if a number is local or long distance. It is usually found in the front of the phone book.

Verizon has a page on their website that offers this service. Google Search Obviously if you have web access you can just check your email that way.

when you try to call it, dial it seven digits and if it goes through it's local, if not then it's LD... Vonage should list teh city that their 'local access number' is actually in, then you could maybe tell too, cuz atleast you'd know what city you were trying to call..

they have that problem here in the 519 , they have 2 exchanges for numbers you can have for your service, and they are in 2 different cities that ona regular landline are LD to each other, but they only have one 'local access number' for VM, and it's LD for ppl who have service in the one city, so those ppl can't go to their friends house and check their VM by using their friends landline phone, cuz they are calling LD..

Vonage's idea of Local is different from all Landlines and Cell providers in North America..

LD and local calls aren't necessarily black and white, and the 7 digit example is incorrect, at least for my area. I can call the same area code (727) with 7 digits and get charged for it. same with 813 which is a different area code (thus 11 digit dialing) but still costs the same. (25 cents per call) if you buy ECS from verizon around here (extended calling service) you can get those calls included in your plan.

you can get charged for dialling a number with only 7 digits??? what?? that makes no sense, how do you know whata LD call is then?

in my area, if we dial 7 digits it either goes through for free, or we geta recording saying we need to dial it with a 1 and area code cuz it's LD.. in some places on the edge of an area code, or a large city with 2 area codes, you dial all numbers as 10 digit, and they area ll free, if they are to be charged they instruct you to dial a 1..

in South Carolina it was a similar deal too..
