I have the Webstar/Scientific Atlanta modem. I believe that it's made by RCA also. I'll report if it fixes my problem. Damn Comcast for 'playing dumb' on this problem. Don't they have a knowledge/problem database at Comcast? Duh?!?

BTW, this not only happens with the combination of computer and ATA phone hitting the internet at the same time, it happens with ANY TWO devices hitting the internet at the same time, try it if you have two computers on a home LAN, do two simultaneous uploads, it'll drop ya for a moment.

I bought and registered a Motorola SB5100 cable modem hoping that it would fix my problems. Nope, they are still there.

Same here. Switched out the RCA with a store-bought Motorola and problems persist. This is the last straw... DSL has been ordered Smile (yes, I'm eating the cost of a basic verizon line for $13/month)

So to recap, I'm in Southeastern MA with Comcast. Everything was working OK until my modem died and they gave me a WebStar (Scientic Atlanta) modem about 4 months ago. Nothings but problems since. Can't use the internet with the phone at all and I have to turn the bandwidth save all the way down. Sounds like poop to the outside caller.

So, as my above post, I tried the Motorola SB5100, same problems persist.

Today I went to Best Buy and gave the Toshiba PCX2200 and BOOM!, it works again!!! I will continue to test under different conditions and post here if anything changes.

This is how I test:
Run MetaProducts Net Activity Diagram's Window Graph. Set the scale to your maximum quoted upload speed (for me I set it at 312kbps). Now open your favorite FTP client program and transfer a large file to a reliable site using port 21. A large file will ensure that the test won't run out prematurely and port 21 is to guard against any weirdness that happens with routers and passive port requests and such. Watch the window graph show your upload speed max out and then float at some level with minimal fluctuations.
Now here's the real test: Pick up your Vonage line and dial out to your cell phone or office phone. The test fails when the PC's window graph shows the upload fade to nothing. At this point, hang up the phone. For me, upload activity never returned. A passing test should show a decrease in upload activity (the upload should not die off!) and then steady out. For me, the PC steadied out at 128kbps or so.

Good luck folks. Hopefully the cable companies wake up and do something about this problem. Unfortunately poor schleps like us, early adopters of new technology get the tough time convincing the cable companies that they do indeed have a problem. Maybe they're too consumed with Aunt Edna's MAC and outsourcing to Canada. Bah!

I would argue that this is a Vonage issue and they need to figure what hardware configurations work with which providers. Cable companies could care less about whether Vonage works or not on their networks.

I have had problems from day one with Vonage with one side of the conversation being dropped if there is ANY other Internet traffic while a call is going on. I've tried 5 different routers to no avail. Finally I read this thread and I'm on my way out to by a new Toshiba PCX2200 at Best Buy tonight (I go to NH to avoid sales...cheap!). It's funny because I went out of my way to purchase the SB5100 9 months ago when it first came out. It was the latest and greatest modem on the market with DOCSIS 2.0 support, blah, blah, blah. I sent an email to Motorola support. I doubt I will get a reply. I REALLY hope this works. We don't have DSL in my town so that's not an option.

Let us know how you make out Sean. I guess you're in MA with Comcast too.

I don't know if I can agree. For me, the problem was when any TWO devices were trying to upload simultaneously- be it Vonage and one of my PCs on the LAN or two PCs. I spoke with a Comcast supervisor who was very attentive. This issue is now in the cue for engineering followup and noted in their knowledgebase.

That did it! I live in Carlisle and yes I have Comcast. Best Buy in Nashua had the Toshiba PCX2600 which I installed tonight. Made a couple of calls to friends for about 20 minutes and banged away on the Internet at the same time. No dropped calls! A few garbled words but that's to be expected. I can't begin to tell you how amazing this is. Before if I did anything on the Internet at the same time I was guaranteed to lose my side of the conversation in the call (i.e. I could still hear the other party). If I only knew this 6 months ago! Vonage NEEDS TO GET THEIR ACT TOGETHER TO RECOMMEND WHAT HARDWARE WORKS WITH WHICH ISP AND IN WHICH AREAS! Thanks again for your tip!

A friend of mine let me try his Toshiba PCX2200 modem and it didn't work! I don't know if it's different version from the one Skully used. I put my new Toshiba 2600 back on and it works fine again. Kind of bumbed since I could have had the PCX2200 for free instead of the $80 for the PCX2600. But it's worth it to have Vonage working correctly.
