PostPosted: Thu Mar 10, 2005 11:04 pm    Post subject: New Install, PAP2 Unit - Phone Line 1 will not activate Reply with quote Back to top

OK, I have scoured the Vonage help files to no avail. Per my signature, I have all Linksys equipment. The PAP2 unit has both the power light and the ethernet light are lit and solid. The my vtech cordless phone is connected to phone 1. I have forwarded all required ports to my PAP2 (using IP 192.168.1.103). Nothing.....

Now, to give the full detail, I ordered my Vonage online..and of course, they sent me the RT31P2 unit, which I did not want at all as I already have a Linksys router that I like. I went ahead and purchased the PAP2 today and installed it.

Does the MAC address on this thing need to be registered to my number? I could find no information on this at all. Reading the instructions, it only states plug it in and your ready to go......that just is not the case. Vonage needs to state, if you replace a phone adapter, please inform us so we can update our system and you can receive your calls........

Anyone have any ideas on this????

Thanks!

JUH

Yes, you do need to register your new MAC address with Vonage. I think this is easily enough done in your account page. The MAC address is how the Vonage service connects calls to you, and they're still expecting the adapter they sent you to be connected.

Yes, Vonage needs to know the MAC address, but also read:

Have you tried to leave the PAP2 on DMZ ?

I greatly appreciate the fast replies! Now, I looked at my account page....and I could not find anything about changing the MAC address there. That would be awesome if I could....and ideal...but I could not find anything on this....If you have...let me know how to get there.

Now on the DMZ idea...I have not tried that as of yet. I figured I had to register my MAC address first...even there I could not see anything about this in any instructions. I just called Vonage support (and I did get in on the first call....) and they changed out my MAC address. I still have no phone but I was told the update could take a couple hours...for thier system to recognize the new MAC address. The DMS idea will be another option if I continue to have problems. I will let you know how this progresses! And if anyone knows how to change the MAC address online...please let me know.

Sincerely,

JUH

I told you about the DMZ idea because it's the easiest way to do. I had port forwarding (5060,5061 and probably a pair more that I dont remember right now). The thing is that I could do normal calls, but I was unable to receive, because Vonage initiated the connection in God knows what random port, and as it wasn't been forwarded, the PAP2 simply did not receive the request, or I couldn't hear the other party (or it was the other way around?). Anyhow, DMZ is the best option for Voip.

Smoothy,

Thank for the DMZ idea...I was moving the PAP2 over to my DMZ port and configuring it when my little Phone 1 lite came on... Awesome! I think you are right.....putting it out on the DMZ is the best. I appreciate the info!

Did you get your phone to work? I bought the PAP2 also and I had to call Vonage and register the MAC so they wouldn't send me the router. I don't forward any ports and I don't have my PAP2 in the DMZ and my setup works just fine.

rlstjohn -

Yes, I did get my phone working. My MAC address was finally updated in there system early this morning and when I was tinkering around, my Phone 1 active light turned on. It was a good thing!

I have heard varying degrees of complexity in setting this thing up. With forwarding, no forwarding..etc. etc.... I have to beleive that my phone would work behind my firewall with no trouble...but I like the DMZ idea. There should be very little issue with ports having it in the DMZ.

Thanks to all for you help on this one!

Sincerely,

JUH

In fact, what DMZ does is leaving the PAP2 completeley exposed to the internet, is like having no router in between. As far as I know you can only have one device on DMZ at a time.

DMZ stands for "DeMilitarized Zone"
