The best thing to do if you are already using a router is to disable the Vonage adaptor's ability to function as a router and just use it as a switch. To accomplish this you can follow the below directions.

1. Disable NAT and DCHP on the Vonage adaptor.
2. From the line coming out of your router plug into lan jack 1 in the back of the Vonage router.
2. If you have a computer plugged into the Vonage adaptor plug it into lan jack 2 on the Vonage adaptor.
3. Take the lan jack 3 on the Vonage adaptor and plug it into the wan jack of the Vonage adaptor.

This will give you the functionality of Voip by turning the Vonage adaptor into just another switch on your network. If you have any other questions please feel free to pm me.

Dumb question -
When he says "Disable NAT and DHCP on the Vonage adpater" is this done by just selecting disable on the Local DHCP Server setting on the RT (or is there more to it than that)?

Help! So I went ahead and changed my setup as follows:

I accessed my Vonage Adapter settings on my RT31P2 (192.168.15.1) and disabled the local DHCP Server setting (not sure if this was the right thing to do...).

I then changed my cables as such:

From my Cable modem to the internet jack on my Linksys BEFW11S4 wireless Router.

From my wireless router Ethernet Jack 1 to the RT31P2 ethernet Jack 1.

From my RT31P2 ethernet Jack 3 to the internet jack on the same unit (RT31P2).

The end result is that both my wireless connections and phone seem to work fine...BUT, I can no longer access the admin setup page of the RT31P2 (@ 192.168.15.1).

Can someone who knows what they are doing please guide me as to what I may be doing wrong? Thanks for any insight!

Well, you have removed the DHCP capability from your Vonage router, which is okay. Your configuration is okay too. But one thing you forgot is that, currently your Vonage router and your wireless routers are on two seperate subnets. The IP on your wireless is probably like 192.168.0.1 or something similiar and your Vonage is 192.168.15.1. The two routers have to have the same subnet. Or else you will not be able to access router B from router A. So you have to change the IP of one of the routers.

so a quick fix to your problem is to plug the computer directly into the router that you are trying to access...then you will be able to access the utility....

From my experience, it's best that you dont use the Vonage router for more then just a phone adapter. So what you want to do is, first reset both routers....... power all down... plug INTERNET port of Vonage to cable modem...... plug WAN of wireless to port 1 of vonage....... and dont touch anything else.... if you want, u can disable the DHCP on your Vonage router, but I would suggest just leaving it the way it is.... afterwhich, if you need to plug any computers in, plug them into your wireless router, and not your vonage..............this is my config and all works well......... with this config, you will be able to access both router's utilities....by typing their respective IPs. Also, in this configuration, QOS is the best. I noticed that my bandwidth is not eatin up as much in this config if a phone call is going on....

if you wish to leave your config the way it is, then change the IP of your Vonage router, plug the computer directly into your Vonage router.... type the Vonage IP..... and in your LAN SETUP, change the ip to one number higher then your wirless router... ex: if your wireless router ip is 192.168.0.1, make your vonage's ip: 192.168.0.2.

Then as soon as you change the ip on the Vonage router, you will probably lose the connection and will have to log into that router with the new ip.

But in my opinion, the configuration I suggested is the best because I got good results with that.

Thanks for the info jamn424,

I tried connecting a cable direct from my computer to the RT31P2 but still could not get access to the config pages using 192.168.15.1. I tried direct from my network jack on my computer to the ethernet 3 port on the RT31P2, I also tried it in the internet jack on the RT31P2. I could not get to the RT31P2 using either method... am I still doing something wrong?

best suggestion buddy, just start from scratch.....

1) first important step, shut computer down.

2) unplug all the cables....

3) press and hold the reset button on your Vonage and wirless routers for 30 seconds.....

4) unplug power of both routers, then 5seconds after, plug back in...

5) wait till the lights stop blinking (maximum 1min)......

6) plug cable modem into INTERNET PORT of Vonage router........

7) plug PORT 1 of Vonage router to WAN port of wireless router.....

8 ) plug PORT 1 of wireless router to computer.....

9) power the computer up

then type: 192.168.15.1 in internet explorer...

this should work.....
