Polarscott,

Just curious if you are having an old number forwarded or not...or if everyone is calling your Vonage number directly? I have my old Verizon number forwarded to my Vonage account since I couldn't port my number and those caller ids never come through.

Hi Robert:

We got a new number for the Vonage service. We considered swapping over our old phone number. But, we were concerned that if Vonage didn't work well for us we'd have problems getting the phone number sorted out. So, we have our original service with our original number, and our Vonage service with a new number. Friends and family have been helping us test Vonage by calling us only on the Vonage number for now.

This probably doesn't help since you are using a corded phone, but I had a VTech cordless phone that wouldn't show caller id when it was plugged into the same outlet as anything electrical at all. I thought it was broken and got another one and it worked fine for a few days and then started doing the same thing. A quick call to VTech customer support told me that my phone has interference issues and must be plugged in by itself. That fixed my problem and I haven't had any problems since.

In case anybody is still paying attention to this . . .

Second round with Vonage telephone customer support didn't fix the problem. Greg, my latest Tech Support Guru did his best, but no Caller ID for me. Booo.

Greg suggested that it could be the phone itself. He said that while the phone's Caller ID may work on a regular phone line, that doesn't necessarily mean it will work with Vonage. Which sounds odd to me, but what the heck do I know?

Greg recommended I find another phone with Caller ID and test the line with that phone.

I accepted the lack of real resolution with grace, but did mention that it's taken two hours of waiting on hold and conversations with four people to reach this inconclusive point. Greg assured me that he'd send me an e-mail with a phone number to reach Tech Support right away, once I'm ready to check the line again.

Got back from a three-hour meeting with a customer - I have a job, after all - and found the e-mail Greg promised to send. It's the same kind of canned e-mail I got back after my initial request to Vonage for technical support on the Caller ID problem.

<howls of laughter>

You gotta have a sense of humor in life, eh?

Sean from Vonage helped me. Said he disabled Caller ID block on Vonage's end of things. It'd been enabled for some reason. (shrug) He called me from another line on my Vonage phone, which - and this is important - I was using to speak to Sean.

His call came through with the tone for a Call Waiting. I also got his Caller ID info on my Caller ID window. Hurrah!

Thinking the problem was solved, I thanked Sean and hung up. Shortly after I got a phone call. No Caller ID. Odd. Hung up on that call and called a friend and asked him to call me back. He did. No Caller ID. Then another call came in from a third person. No Caller ID.

Since you were able to see a Vonage Caller ID, but no out of system Caller ID did you try and reset the router since this call?

Hi:

Yes, we tried that twice, actually. Greg reported that everything looked hunky dory on my account on his end - all systems go - all pistons firing - warp five, Scotty! - but, no Caller ID appearing on my end.

The only time Caller ID info appeared was when I was on the line and a Call Waiting call came through. It worked fine then.

And, that's all I know.

Is this the case with calls not from the Vonage network as well?

Yes. I remember last week being on the phone and my neighbor called. Call Waiting tone sounded in headset; I glanced at the Caller ID window and saw my neighbor's name and phone number on it. They do not use Vonage.

So, I think we can assume that Caller ID works when Call Waiting engages.

Any a-ha! solutions come out of that? I'm wide open to suggestions.

No a-ha solutions, just a lot of head scratching. I do know that on my phone it is the phone itself that I set up to determine when Call ID would be seen, it could be on or off when working with call waiting. The only place on the Vonage system that it mattered was in features where it was a simple on or off button. Have you tried the phone you are using on the Vonage system on the POTS line to see if you see Call ID there?

You aren't by any chance answering your phone on the first ring are you? Sometimes (with Vonage or a POTS line) it will take until the second ring for the Caller-ID to come through.
