RT31P2, firmware 1.28.00:


I have Comcast 4000/384 service.

Test Procedure:
1. Begin uploading large zip file to Comcast's FTP server
2. Dial *123 for voicemail, log in.
3. Dial "0" for help, to keep the connection open
4. Run DU Meter's stopwatch for about 60 seconds, record the average.
5. Hang up phone

Upload rate without a phone call: 383.2 (this is my max upload speed)
Upload rate during a call, no QoS: 293.7
Bandwidth used by the call: 89.5

Actual Bandwidth Usage = FTP Upload Rate + 89.5
Cap Utilization = Actual Bandwidth Usage / QoS Setting

I notice that the utilization starts to drop quickly for QoS values above 400. I suspect that somewhere between 400 and 425, my cable modem cap starts to restrict data.

I conclude that the RT31P2's QoS isn't really that far off for this tier of service. With a setting of 384, my utilization is better than 90%. With 400, it's around 96% (371.3 / 383.2). However, 425 is too high and would likely lead to excessive jitter.

I'm going to leave mine set to 400.

are you guys disabling the bandwidth saver on the Vonage account page?
i have my rt behind my wrt54gs router (no 3rd party firmware). ive only had Vonage service up and running for about 3 days or so but have made a lot of calls. i have not made any modifications except to make sure QoS was on in the wrt router. my calls are fine as well as upload speed (i have 4/386 comcast). are you guys saying i will experience some issues with the default settings sooner or later?

no, but with the internet problems will almost definitely happen sooner or later. that doesn't mean it's with your setup. you have a good router with good qos functionality. you shouldn't have to change the bandwidth saver.

I have completed my testing such as "paul248" did.

My system is comprised of an Ambit cable modem (not sure of the model since it is under my desk pedestal holding it up acting as the fourth foot!) connected to Charter Communications and my RT31P2 v.1.28.00 then off to my DI-604 (yes I have two routers functioning with DHCP enabled, did so because I was doing some file transfers one day and Vonage sent a reboot command to my RT31P2 and I lost the transfers. So the D-Link was reinstalled to eliminate that issue.)

Anyway, I have a 3M/256kbs connection and my RT31P2 QoS was at 512kbs.
While using DU Meter and running a file transfer I max out at 166kbs while on or off the phone. I found that this does not change between 255kbs and 1024kbs, slight variations here and there, but not much.
How much you are thinking? How about less than 4kbs!

So to me QoS is not what I originally thought it was. Far as I can tell, it is just a cap so the bandwidth is available for phone at all times. (But I am not on the phone at all times!)

Well now, I thought I should run some tests on the system with the QoS disabled.
Know what? I transferred another (BIG) file and was talking on the phone before and after it and we could not tell a difference in the quality of the conversation with the file speeding out of my computer at 250ishkbs. So I called him back without a transfer and he reported the same thing.

Of course I am going to keep my eye on this one because it has me. Paul248 shows in his graph that there is a definite difference, but on mine there isn’t. The only thing that I can conclude is that I may be getting a little extra from Charter because they know I went with Vonage? Could this be why I was on a 66.xx.xxx.xx IP address and now I am on one completely different? And if I change my system back to what it was without Vonage I go back to the 66.xx.xxx.xx IP address? More poking and prodding coming soon, as I am curious!

I should point out that, even with my QoS set to 100 (way too low), the upload speed shoots up to my cable modem's max when there's not a phone call in progress.
