In adding a virtual private number to my account, I went to the webpage to add a VPN, selected the state=Texas, area code=817, then under the list of cites was about 8 or so, but 3 of the cities had the abbreviation EMS beside them. Anyone know what that means? Vonage wasn't able to provide an answer. I can think of several possibilities: Emergency Medical Services, Extended Metropolitan Service, Extended Mobile Service, etc... |

Same sort of issue: I want to maybe add a virtual number in western Maryland. When I go to areacode 301, I get several 'Washington area 4' (whatever) and the like, and nothing with a town in western MD (okay...). I googled with no luck. Anyone know what these metro 'areas' mean? I assume they are all near metro DC, but it would be nice to know *what* area you were picking when there are several to choose from! |

MmmDee,
You guessed it;
I would guess hazard a guess that they might be identified on the FoneFinder site as prefixes listed by city "FORT WORTH _____". But that is purely a WAG.
I would recommend visiting the phone finder site and see what is listed for the prefix you will be called from. |

leesweet,
I had the same issue when I signed up for service. I found a site that correlated the Washington Zone numbers with cities in Virginia, and I changed the URL to Maryland and had success.
See if this helps you (Scroll down to Washington Zone x section):

Thanks for the abbreviations link, that makes me feel a bit better regarding the meaning of EMS. I'm a bit surprised that CS didn't know the answer. If CS ever gets back to me with a different answer or signing up with an EMS city gives a peculiar result, I'll post more.
Fonefinder didn't really help that much, I pretty much already knew the outlying/connecting areas using the same area code and nothing on the 817 page mentioned EMS so I'm preceding under the idea that EMS (in the Vonage context) = "Extended Metro Service".
Thanks again, Bob/Comcast/PAP2 on wireless Linksys WRT54G through a second router |

Thanks for the tip! At first glance it at least tells you what state your 'Washington' number is in and the part of the state Good find!
Now, why can V have a link to such a site? The usual legal reasons, I suppose... |
