I see that the concensus is that Telmex is port blocking to disrupt Voip users. While I am not very technically up on the Voip protocols, it would seem that Telmex could more easily block the Voip providers IP addresses and achieve a total block by just making the Voip "unavailable" . As I said in an earlier post, the symptoms that I see is general packet disruption - I don't see any TCP/IP errors because TCP/IP is error correcting, but Voip uses UDP which is just throw it out and see... I have been running many tests over TestYourVoIP.com and generally get an MOS of 1.0, but now and then I get 3+. Using TestYourVoIP "golden phone" I can get thru even though I get a twoway test of 1.0 and can hear a reasonable echo (I have my bandwidth set down to 30kb)... IPSEC also uses UDP to set-up the encrypted session and it suffers the same packet destruction that Voip does making the VPN unconnectable. Do these symptoms sound to you like Telmex is randomly destroying UDP packets?

Another question... If I have a VPN tunnel set-up from my US home to my Mexico home, can I get out over the US gateway to Vonage?

Thought I'd mention the suggested alternative of going with satellite internet provider. I just spoke with "Starband" a company that I know has users here in Baja, Mexico. They told me flat out that a satellite connection would not work very well with voice over ip.

Personally, I'm willing to spend the $$$ to have voice over ip in Mexico. But clearly a satellite IP is seemengly not the answer to our problem.

It still confuses me to no end that there must be several thousand if not more Voip users in Mexico and if you multiply that times $25/mo. That's some serious $$$. Isn't anyone going to go get it?? Carlos Slim of Telmex won't get my $$ at any cost. I'll just go back to using calling cards and a call back system.

I have been quite pleased with my Voip with Vonage as it's been an excellent way for me to communicate and have others communicate with me, but it seems to have been short lived. I hope you guys at Vonage recognize the growing number of folks either living or retiring in Mexico that are a virtual pool of income for ya. I do hope you'll try to put at least one engineer into working on this and get it working for us. Doesn't make sense to loose that kind of cash for a bit of R&D or re-routing.

is comcast the one blocking. i ran speed tests and get 303 up/940down..

can I reboot the motorola..how can you tell if its the block ports that are causing the problem..?

How can I get the latest firmware...? upgrade..
or get to the VT1005-v config..

hook directly to the PC..correct..?? Twisted Evil

Try getting data from other forums. From the threads before this one, Comcast was not blocking, as far as I know.

To get better help:
Go to your profile by going to "Your Account" on the left bar.

Go to the icon labeled "Your Information"

Scroll down to where it says "Signature (optional)" write the name of your cable modem, your ISP and your router

It will look like my signature

I have a friend in Telmex and this is what he told me:

Telmex is blocking Vonage in Mexico.
There are 2 known ways to avoid telmex blockage:
Make sure there is a router between your Vonage and your DSL modem, if this does not work, try changing the MAC address of the router.
Conect your pc to the DSL modem and Vonage to the pc, using the pc as a router.
You might have to fiddle with the settings a bit but these workarounds are working for the people I know.

I'm not so sure it's that easy. Especially since the outage not only affects Vonage but pc based phones calling services as well.

I do appreciate the input of course. And I'd be willing to give it a try. Do you use Vonage by the way and is your service working? Or is it hearsay? I ask because I've had a few friends in La Paz tell me that there service was working just fine. So I've gone to their homes asking use their service and wallah---It doesn't work. And the reply is "But it worked last week"

So if this simple fix works, would you have step by step instructions? What would the mac address be and where is it located? That's fur us iliterite computer types.

I contacted my cable company ISP at the time I signed onto Vonage. I got an e-mail back from a vice President stating I was welcome to use Voip and would I let him know personally if any problems came up that might be attributed to the cable.

A couple weeks later he phoned me to inquire how well Vonage was working. He seemed to be quite interested.
