I did a search for suscom and found nothing, it is a small cable company located in southern PA, I have been having some problems with my connection

I have a surfboard 4100 and the Vonage black box, i don't remeber the model # of that device. I have it running directly into my cable modem and my computer connected to the Vonage box.

Here are my problems: from most problematic to least
1. when using the internet I lose connection when not on the phone and I have to wait for the the lights on the Vonage box to go through its set up and once it is solid green the connection is fine. (never happend before Vonage)
2. I really can't be on the internet and the phone at the same time cause then i always soon loose connection with the internet or the person on the other line is unable to hear me clearly.
3. Every now and then when I try to dial a # sometime the phone just doesn't do anything and no call is made.
4. When ever doing an automated phone service like checking account balances over the phone the automated phone service doesn't read my tones, this has happened with more than one such automated service.
5. And just normal breaking up conversations, I have the quality on high[/b]

Chris,
I may be able to get you some help.. I do not work for SusCom.. I work for another Wireless provider in PA... but have some connections to the network staff at SusCom.

I'm confused by your first statement:

Quote:

1. when using the internet I lose connection when not on the phone and I have to wait for the the lights on the Vonage box to go through its set up and once it is solid green the connection is fine. (never happend before Vonage)

You say that once the lights are solid it's fine.. does the router just reboot on it's own while you are using the internet? If so that's not right... and I'd ask for a new one. Are you sure you mean the Vonage box and not the cable modem? Just need some clarification here.

Interesting.. suscom just rolled out 768 up / 5 meg down residential plan. You shouldn't be having any issues.. go to http://speedtest.suscom.net and see what speed that gives you.. then run the http://www.vonage-forum.com/voip-speed-test.html bandwidth test here and see how your Voip checks out... if there is a WILDLY different number from the two tests (ie the Voip test is slower then the speedtest) then suscom is having a backhaul issue... let me know what the result is. When you lose the connection to the internet... does it just vanish? Does the cable modem reset? What happens? If the person can not here you ther eis an upload issue or latency issue... are you running any p2p software? Have you tried it on a "quiet connection" ie... not running anything or even with the computer off?

I can't answer that one.

This sounds like a transmission issue.. if I remember correctly, the touchtones on Voip are sent on a sub-carrier frequency or on a different connection all togethor and then regenerated on the other end... so again this leads me to believe data loss.

It SHOULD work fine on high, but maybe try setting it down. I know for a fact the network administrator at SusCom uses Vonage (I referred him) and he loves it.. so it DOES work on SusCom... which part of Southern, PA are you in (trying to get an idea of which cable segment).

Respond back and I'll try to help you a bit more.

I will be interested to see how you make out. I am moving just a few miles south in June, and am crossing over a line that will require me to switch from Comcast to Suscom. So far, my Vonage works pretty well with Comcast.

Regarding Suscom's speed, their website says 5Mbps x 256Kbps, and I thought I saw that on TV, too. Is it now 768 up / 5 meg down, or is that an optional plan?

And, on a completely unrelated note, would you happen to also know anyone in the channel programming area? Wink Suscom carries Comcast Sportsnet MidAtlantic, but not Comcast Sportsnet Philadelphia. Moving 8 minutes south is going to cause me to miss all the televised Phillies games during the week this year, unless they'd add it.

I have SUSCOM broadband and I have had no issues with my Vonage connection. In my config, I have an old linksys cable modem (BEFMCU10), the linksys RT31P2 from Vonage (version 1.27.01), and a linksys wireless router (BEFW11S4). Setup works great - though I would like to upgrade my cable modem to a Motorola SB5100 as I have not been able to achieve downlod speeds above 2.6MB and I believe upgrading to a more modern DOCSIS 2.0 capable unit may open up my bandwidth constraint.

Totally OT here.. but yes.. if you upgrade to a modern DOCSIS modem you will get the full 5 meg.

Suscom Test Results:
Your current bandwidth reading is:
4.52 Mbps
which means you can download at 578.31 KB/sec. from our servers.

Vonage Voip Speed Test Results:

Download 1,417,008 bps
Upload 159,544 bps
QOS 60%
RTT 87 ms
MaxPause 109 ms

As for the questions when i use the internet, cable modem lights stay on, except the online and activity light, once they are on the Vonage light then runs through its pulses and about a minute later my internet connection is back on. Now this does do it when the phone is not even being used and the internet is not being used either. i.e. picking up the phone downstairs to make a call and no dial tone, go upstairs and i see the Vonage light flashing.

I just tried to call my brother, dialed the # and i got no ring at all, went up stairs and the Vonage box light is doing its reboot thing again but the light on the modem was fine by the time i got up stairs, just the Vonage flashing

I live in the Wrightsville/East Prospect area, east of york city but not across the susquehanna

Let me know what you think based on the results and the boxes flashing

SSJChris,

The fact that you mention that the Vonage router is rebooting may be where the problem lies. It may be defective, I believe others on this board have reported rebooting problems with the RT31P2 (though it does work fine for many, including me). Do you know what firmware your RT31P2 is on (it should be at 1.27.01 now). You can check by browsing 192.168.15.1 (leave user id blank and put in admin for password).

As noted above.. if the cable modem ONLINE light is not flashing.. then it has probably not lost association with the upstream head end..... sounds like the Vonage router is rebooting for whatever reason (if the power light is flashing quickly).... Might want to give Vonage a call about that one.. it does sound like a bad unit.

On another note.. that's a pretty horrid throughput once you get off the suscom network... It drops from 5 meg to about 1 meg... yikes.

Call Vonage... tell them your Vonage box is rebooting and see what they have to say....assuming your cable modem link light is staying on... it's probably the Vonage box is defective.
