I just spoke with the tech support folks and they confirmed this was a known problem with the cisco box. They also said the only way to resolve the problem at this time was to replace my unit with a new motorola unit.

THE PROBLEM: as was mentioned earlier, as soon as you agree to the swap your old unit STOPS WORKING until the new one shows up. So for several days you are left without phone service! With an 85 year old mother at home during the day by herself, I don't think so!

So I told the tech support guy to forget about the swap and I would call him back to disconnect Vonage as soon as I had one of his competitors unit installed and working.

Any suggestions on a replacement for Vonage would be appreciated. I'll go back to bell before I put up with this crap any longer.

Can you forward your calls to your cell phone? I would consider getting another ATA if that was the case.
You can either set the call forwarding to your cell phone or set the Network availability number to your cell phone (this is what I have set). As soon as they issue the new ATA and disconnect your old one, you'll be "offline" so your network availability number would kick in right away. You can set either through your dashboard. I had to take my network down this weekend (I mean everything-switches, firewall, servers, pcs, and Vonage) and the network availability started forwarding calls immediately! Great feature...now waiting for call lists and ACR!

The reason phones use DTMF (Dual Tone Multi Frequency, known Bell System wide as Touch Tone tm) is so that spurious signals cannot trigger the switching equipment to recognize them as a digit.

This makes it a firmware issue with pretty much all the ATA's Vonage uses. They need to fix that.

I hear the same beeps occasionally when calling my wife at home from work. The Quality was great but I thought that maybe she was hitting the keypad every now and then.

*bump*

I know that there are many other, more recent, posts on this same topic. However this thread seems to have the most information.

I am a new Vonage customer as of 7/28/05 and I am already experiencing the same problem with false DTMF tones. I purchased a Linksys WRTP54G and have a good cable connection.

We called Vonage about the problem and they sent a firmware update to my device. They also told my lady to do all of this other stuff that seemed more like voodoo then technical troubleshooting. I’m a tech as well and understand that a lot of actions that work don’t always make sense. I also know that actions like restarting every piece of networking equipment in the house and the phone is a blanket action that is not likely to fix anything unless there is a problem with a device. There were a number of other rain dances that the tech asked her to do but I will not go into that here and now.

I hope this firmware update fixes things. I am really excited about Voip but problems such as falsely triggered DTMF tones are not acceptable. We may hate the telcos for taking advantage of our checkbooks but they do have the most reliable network. I have high expectations for Vonage. For me the phone should just work. We’ll see how well they measure up.

We've been discussing this here as well. I have the Linksys RTP31P2. One tech I talked to seems to know what I was talking about. Another tech I spoke to says he never heard of this problem. I really think we should band together, gather all our trouble ticket numbers and present them to Vonage. They can't ignore us if we show them how many our their customers have this issue.

Also, if someone reading this has this problem and hasn't called tech support, please do so. Make sure a ticket is opened and write down the number.

FYI, I'm at the latest firmware and have tried multiple codecs to no avail.

What does everyone think?

I'm still getting these random touch tones. I have the RT31P2 adapter. Should I call for a new TA?

Thanks.

I notice it extensively when my wife is speaking on the Vonage line to me on an outside line.

PS-I know its not the phone cause its a Western Electric 554 rotary dial.

I have the beeps too, although I haven't heard them myself. My wife called me on her cell today and told me to quit beeping her. I told her to shut her mouth and quit telling me what to do... lol just kidding. But seriously it was beeping she said.

I sure do hear Vonage say "there's nothing we can do about it" quite a bit...

you can get a new ta if you want but it won't make any difference. this is a voip-wide problem, not just Vonage.
